If white women voted like black women, no republican would win an election.

If Dem and liberal leaning men ..in all colors...would turn out like black women elections would go better for us. I'm losing my patience and tolerance for non-political males right now with all the threats to democracy and rights, and the shameless performance and threats coming from Mary's uncle Donald.

What really confuses and frustrates me is the willingness of women and Black Republican congressman who back that misogynistic bigot.

Men aren’t the largest voting demographic, white women are and the majority of white women vote republican. 53% voted for trump.

Expand full comment

Apparently true according to the Pew Research Center. But that was in 2020--before Dobbs. My guess is that Biden will do considerably better among white women (and among all women) this time.

Wow that’s great. Will 95% of white women vote for Biden (and democrats) the way black women will? No. Maybe 50%. White women are pissed because republicans finally made good on what they’ve been promising they would do for decades. How awful for them. Were all these white women pissed when republicans took away the rights of minorities? Nope. So now they’re interested? The other 50% of white women are not angry, they support being second class citizens. They support a ban on abortion. I guess they vote republican for the same reason white men do, they’re racist. Or maybe they just like being chattel. Angry white women can spare me their self righteous indignation.

This white woman gets so frustrated when her white sisters vote Republican because, well I don’t know why, really, but my best guess is they think Rs will cut their taxes (they won’t), and that somehow saving a few bucks is more important than owning their own bodies. Here’s hoping this year that will finally change.

53% of women voted for the Rump? I don't know what to say to that except that I have all confidence in white women. Apparently, something has caused them to have a major disconnect with reality. Or,they're just voting their husbands ballots like dingos in the bush? That is absolutrly insane. It's like people voting to go to for life. I hope after Dobbs that women have more sense. Stop letting your husbands fill out your voting forms before you sign them. Make sure he doesn't change your voting preferences after you've done your job. If your man is going for fascism that means you are headed for an absolutely horrible future life, not only for yourself and your family but everyone in America. There is no woman except an insane woman that votes for the likes of the tRump or his American fascist party formerly the Republican Party. Remember if the balance says Republicon vote for the other guy.

I wish people wouldn't conflate Trump with a secondary sex characteristic that is very attractive on both genders, and that has been celebrated in paintings and sculpture.

Black women recognize that Republicans won't help their families at all, and in most instances, actually try to hurt at risk families in poverty and people of color. This country has enough resources to help everyone have enough food, clothing, and shelter, if the morbidly rich would stop grasping for everyone else's resources. There is no reason a big petroleum company, making billions in profits, should need subsidies. The same goes for big agricultural conglomerates.

I can only think they believe all the online propaganda and bots. Hopefully, they’ll wake up before it’s too late. Muslims, same; they want to support the guy who wants to deport them all?

Big Biz uses immigration to keep wages down. In 1980, meat packers were Black, earning good middle class wages. By that decade's end, they were immigrants, toiling under atrocious conditions for barely more than minimum wage. That change repeated itself in virtually all of the low/no-skilled jobs.

Many Blacks are aware of that. The late Black Texan Representative Barbara Jordan, who ran a commission on immigration reform under Pres Clinton, recommended greatly reducing immigration numbers, and strict enforcement, for those reasons. Unfortunately, she died shortly after her work was done, and her recommendations were not implemented or Trump, whose signature issue was immigration, probably would never have gained the White House (google her if you're not familiar with her--she was great).

Some Latino voters may also be aware of immigration's dampening effect on wages and job availability. And see: Back of the Hiring Line: A 200-Year History of Immigration surges, Employer Bias, and Depression of Black Wealth, by Roy Beck.

Incidentally, I consider Biden the best pres of my lifetime--which began the first summer of the Eisenhower Administration. He's like the wind at my back when I'm on my bicycle. But he's been lousy on one issue, while being truly great on everything else. That one issue: immigration.

Expand full comment

It’s the R’s in the House who are screwing up the border issue, but please tell me more about how President Biden is GREAT on all the other issues. I’m so hung up on how awful the other guy is that I lose sight of President Biden’s strengths. And you know mainstream media won’t discuss them much. Thanks!

Expand full comment

I'm not good at remembering the details, even though I remember having heard all the good things he's done. But there's so much. For example, Biden led NATO to oppose Russia's invasion of Ukraine--that is, he got all the many members of NATO to oppose Russia (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).

Our relations with China were in bad shape when Biden was first elected. He flew to China and met with their leader, Xi, and our relations with China have been much better since then.

Biden got the US economy going after he took office (it was in bad shape from Trump) by passing legislation such as the Chips and Science Act, that's helped bring our supply chains on chips--which are critical components of high tech products, including cars and much else--which we would otherwise have had to import. But instead American companies are now making chips. He's done more, similar stuff on the economy, as well as in the wake of COVID, making money available to low income Americans, which helped a lot of people through the pandemic when many couldn't work, or had much less work, and their having that money to spend boosted the economy.

The number of uninsured Americans hit an all-time low of 7.2% in the second quarter of 2023.

Biden may have finally found the labor market’s sweet spot. The economy added 14.8 million jobs over the first three years of his term, more than any president in US history over the same period. What’s more, unemployment has remained below 4% for the longest stretch since the 1960s.

Biden's the first president ever to stand with Union workers.

Biden prevented the GOP from shutting down the government, which would have been disastrous, with his skilled negotiating. Kevin McCarthy, the then Republican Speaker of the House, admitted that Biden was very sharp. Biden also outnegotiated the current House Speaker, Mike Johnson.

If you want to feel what Biden can do, watch at least some of the State of the Union address, here:

https://www.whitehouse.gov/state-of-the-union-2024/

It will make you feel like you've got a strong wind at your back, as it did me.

Thanks much! I’m familiar with some of these things, and will review. I wish I could come up with a personal story of how President Biden’s work has made my life better in the immediate. Reproductive freedom has traditionally been my number one issue, and I’m glad he came around on that, but I’m too old now to have to worry about that for myself. Now my biggest issue outside of destroying Trump is fighting climate change, but I’m not well versed in what our president has done about that, or even why what he has done is good. Mention an accomplishment on that front and be prepared for a barrage of insults from people who think it’s nothing but government controlling how you live. I’m not sure how to argue back to that. Luckily, I don’t have to very often, but I’d like to be prepared.

I think you can bank on both translating into additional votes for Biden and Democrats everywhere. Biden's fundraising ability is part of Biden's general ability. He's amazing wht he can do. He flew to China to repair relations with Xi. And while he was there, he flew to I think it was at least 6-7 other nations in that area to cement our ties with them. And all this flying to different places in different time zones would have worn out a lesser person. He's amazing what he accomplishes. Rick -- I just heard the attorney general of Colorado say the threats against all voter poll workers are serious and frightening. The MAGAs are at it again. Call local police to put a trace on the call? Jot down the exact time of the call? We need to start a national defense against such calls. Anyone who can help, please jump in.

I am loving Trump's sudden Bible affectation. Every time he mentions it I think of him wordlessly holding a Bible upside down in front of the church near the White house in 2020, to gain TV coverage when protests of George Floyd's killing by police were grabbing all the headlines. First he cleared the crowd from Lafayette Square with police on horseback and used some sort of gas. Then he lead "his generals" and others, through the Square to St. John's. Ivanka took a Bible out of her purse and handed it to her dad., who stood there without speaking. General Milley apologized afterwards, saying he was embarrassed to be part of the "event", which apparently had no purpose except to get Trump on TV.
