It’s hard to read and watch the news these days. My PTSD is off the charts right now. Thank you for all you do.

Expand full comment

I no longer read or watch the news any more. There's no point. I've done everything that I'm physically and financially capable of doing, and the anxiety had become overwhelming. The only news source I use now are the multiple excellent substacks to which I subscribe. (Like you, Angela, I figured out a few weeks ago that I have PTSD from what happened in the 2016 election which is inflaming the current situation. At major bonfire level now.)

I am reading a wonderful book by James Middleton called “Ella, the Dog Who Saved My Life”. James, apart from being the brother in law of the future King of England, has struggled most of his life with dyslexia, ADD and depression. But he writes a wonderfully uplifting book on how he worked through those challenges. Very, very uplifting.

Expand full comment

Thanks for the book review! You Just reminded me that I read Henry Winkler's book 'Being Henry' earlier this year and it was uplifting and I have a better understanding of what it is like to have dyslexia.

Yes, dogs are angels too!

Agreed on dogs. My cat allergy, much to the dismay of my kids, prevents cat ownership. But I have a plethora of dogs. And books. Right now I’m sitting in my living room reading Substack while mending my kids stuffed animals that were mauled by one of the dogs this week. Tonight’s project is making the mama/baby turtle combo stuffie whole again and creating a pirate patch for the missing eye on the mama. Hand mending is cathartic in times of high stress, especially when reading doesn’t quite cut it.

Given the thousands of years during which we coevolved with dogs, it's not surprising we love them so much!

Expand full comment

I just read something that said "The Dogs Who Love Us". It took me aback. I (most of us?) always think in terms of how much we love our dogs. But do we turn it around and think how much THEY love US? I got thinking about it, and decided: probably more. Who becomes very sad when their person leaves? Do we get very sad when they leave to go play? No we do not. I found myself feeling ENORMOUS gratitude to Jhapa and Lady -- and all of the precious dogs in my life who have loved me so. Bella, Turbo, Tyler, Ki, Quinta, Saba, Tippy. I have been so beyond richly blessed by their love.

My sweet dogs are the best! I've been really surprised that reading (which I have done prolifically my entire life), is not helping. I think it must be feeling kind of irrelevant in the light of the here and now. Cooking (which I'd never done much of, or very well) is proving to be a good release.

Expand full comment

My release is overeating. Even a good cheeseburger doesn't get rid of Trump anxiety at this point.

Expand full comment

And that's saying something!! (Have you thought about trying something different? Perhaps the cheeseburgers are unconsciously reminding you of the orange sadist-traitor's favorite food?)

Expand full comment

I did think of that -that’s his favorite food. But then I quickly distanced myself mentally from him because I only drink real Coke, never Diet Coke which he drinks. I always need the complimentary french fries with that cheeseburger too. I can do Cane’s chicken too. I’ve never seen him eat that. I doubt they have those restaurants in Florida. But orange sadist and I do have food likes in common. Am I a bad person now?

Expand full comment

Hey kd, doggies are great except for when they go to terrorize the cats. They are good little souls, though, only demanding love!

Expand full comment

My only experience with dogs + cats was 10 years ago. I had a beautiful dog (who'd been terribly abused when I adopted her) and a precious silver kitty (adopted as a kitten). Minnow (the kitty) went to sleep every night with Bella (who was terrified of people b/o how she'd been treated, and wouldn't leave the bathroom where she holed up for the first few months). Minnow's love played an enormous role Bella's psychological healing. When Bella felt safe enough to come to bed with us, Minnow always followed and they cuddled up together. So I think I'm prejudiced! LOL! (or maybe just inexperienced. It's always been dogs in the decades before that.)

Expand full comment

That's a lovely account!

I am 100% a dog person. They are little people as far as I'm concerned. Heartbreaking how some people have treated animals. But they mistreat humans, why should we expect them to be kind to an animal.

Making bread is helpful too. There's something about getting into the rhythm of kneading it which is very relaxing.

Expand full comment

I've never tried that. (I kid you not: I always thought I was "too stupid" to be able to bake bread.) The time has come. Thank you so much. (The way you describe it makes me remember how soothing it was to lie in a hammock and just rock...)

Expand full comment

It takes a little patience - a good yeast. But if you find a good, basic, tried and true recipe to start out with, it's great. The kneading is a good workout and the house smells wonderful while it's baking. You can start by looking at the King Arthur baking website....lots of good information and help.

I agree that books help us deal with this anxiety. I recommend you read my book, A Graver Danger, about how corruption in our schools brought us to this PTSD place. It’s infuriating to know what they’re doing but when you know you can do something about it. It’s our helplessness against Trump that’s giving us PTSD.

If you want to learn a way disinformation penetrated our culture you’ll find out. I include a true story about how I was teaching proper note taking from legitimate library sources in 1997 to my fourth grade class and a parent, whose son earned a D having not done his work, submitted a page of notes from the internet insisting my lesson was worthless now that everything is on the internet. She demanded those notes change his grade. The principal ordered me to indulge her as if facts didn’t matter. I hardly knew of the internet at that time but common sense told me how do I know these are facts?

If you knew what’s been really going on in our schools - what my book is about - the death of facts would make total sense to you. Check out WhiteChalkCrime.com where I’ve been trying to expose our schools since 1995. You’ll find my book. Our nation’s biggest problem is we stopped respecting teachers who were society’s glue until they weren’t and we fell apart. Trust me it’s not the teachers’ fault. It’s the administrators that set them up so you’d stopped listening to them, using ruthless teacher abuse if they dare speak out. That’s why you don’t know about this.

I wrote a book with a plan to get great teachers back in power. Please read it. Not only can we do that but you will find some peace of mind understanding how we got to a place where so many would think Trump was a reasonable choice for president.

If you lined up people and asked them do you want to fly in plane one with a trained pilot or plane two with famous Stevie’s Wonder flying the plane, the trained pilot would win. But when it comes to choosing a president you need a decent education that sorts out facts to pick a president. Trump’s power proves how indecent our schools are. However, if you will listen to me, a teacher, it doesn’t have to be this way.

My 11 year old cat, Diego, was "gifted" to my front door here in Merida, Mexico. he is the smartest little gentleman: my best friend. At 85, all my human best friends are dead; most were younger than me!

I have tried to stop paying attention to US politics except for the corruption associated with the Israeli Holocaust. The best way to get a modicum of truth is Youtube, books and Substacks. The USA does not have a Congress or a Senate that represents the "people"; it serves Israel. Our 2 candidates for President promise to serve Israel and the winner will do just that.

I certainly agree. My own PTSD began in 1965 thanks to a pedophile father very like DJT. I never watch videos of him now or more than glance at his ugly photos before moving on FAST to other topics.

I especially enjoy Facebook reels about a hilarious old lady ("Mother of heathens") and a doctor who tests the reflexes of newborns in a hospital far away... though I must try to stop providing facts to a host of Karens there who incessantly comment that testing reflexes is somehow cruel and unnecessary!

People determined to ignore facts are everywhere, sadly.

But of course he didn’t start here. I don't think Vance actually hates women, I think, being bought and paid for by a billionaire he knows what he has to do and say, and his greed for power and wealth overwhelms whatever morality he previously held. I think he is simply indifferent and thus willing to trample anyone to achieve his goals. At least Trump probably has a serious personality disorder

Birds of a feather.

Mary would have to confirm that by discussing that particular relationship. He’s a serial philanderer. And that’s because he doesn’t respect anyone, much less women. To him, women have always been something to play with. Perhaps he emulates his father in that way too, I don’t know. But aside from the reasons Mary has discussed (his mother’s illnesses and hospitalizations at the formative age) there have also been women who rebuffed him and he just either thrusted himself on them, or it became hatred because of denial. Psychologically, that can cause a lot of his behavior. A dude never wants women to think he’s disgusting.

The NYT has made itself into the American version of "PRAVDA". This is THE most important story of the MONTH -- and the effing editors of the NYT can't even bother making it headline material?!!! That phrase I read so often that "I can't wrap my head around it" is something I've never used before.

But today: "I CAN'T WRAP MY HEAD AROUND THIS!!!" Is this just the NYT preparing to be the orange sadist-traitor's mouthpiece?? This is incomprehensible -- and equally horrifying!!

Did you mean Pravda?

YES! I'll fix that. Funny slip. Спасибо!

NYT and WaPo are degenerates at keyboards. Neither deserves our attention. I’m a happy ‘unsubscriber’

What the billionaire owner of the WaPo has done to the writers at that once great newspaper is despicable. And his hire of one of Rupert Murdoch's acolyte as Editor is shameful. I think that the real degeneracy starts at the top. And I believe that there are still many journalists who are trying to fight against it.

Jen...envision for a moment that trump was invited to tea at Windsor by the late ( but great) Queen Elizabeth. ...and the air turned blue with his rendition of the English language...

Bet she'd send in a kennel of corgis to show him the door🤗

Let that picture stay in your mind...

Then tell all your American chums to Vote Blue.!

I don't know anything about the Drudge Report, but I'm glad they had the right headline. I was totally shocked to read what trump said about executing Liz Cheney. I didn't think he could really shock me any more, but this time he did. I guess what we're looking at here is what it means to be transactional (something I've never understood and hope I never will).

Yes, his comments are vile and disgusting, and exhibits character beneath that of any person seeking the Presidency. But it's typical for him and sadly an accepted behavior from many in the cult that is Trump. When will GOP leaders like Romney, Bush or even Mike Johnson (as the proud Christian he pretends to be) step up and do what is right? They won't and America as we knew it is gone.

VILE & DISGUSTING are the new norm, it seems. Joking about hanging Pence or beating someone to death. Hogtying Biden & tossing into a pickup truck..... Disgusting. Even NEANDERTHALS would be more civilized than this bunch of sewer - dwelling sewage - eating CHUDS.

Harbingers for this nightmare, like Malcome Nance, Sarah Posner, Ruth Ben-Ghiant, Jane Meyer, Ann Applebaum and others have been yelling from the hilltops with warnings for a long time.

All the information to "know your enemy" are there. No counter attack has been made until now.

Kamala Harris is heroically leading us with a final "last stand?!?"

Kamala Harris also welcomes her enemies to the table. Keep your enemies close is wise.

Kamala has handled the protesters at the packed rallies with class, distinction and a steadfast belief in her vision of democracy. Winston Churchill formed a wartime coallition that worked together to defeat a tyranical dictator. Kamala Harris will form a "wartime" coalition to crush and defeat a tyranical "wanna be" dictator.

I hope, hope, hope that the courts fire back up quickly with his pending cases, so there is resolution. In cases like 45's, there should be NO APPEALS!!

His white privilege has allowed him to threaten people, promote and incite violence and even commits violence and yet he walks free. Where is justice cowering, in a back room? Or is he being given him enough rope to lasso him for good? He is the laughing stock of the world and a dangerous threat to national security and the well being of America. A former president that allowed thousands to die in the pandemic and the worst president in history of the country.

There have been other white a-holes that have not gotten away with the stuff he has. What is different about him that he has been allowed to for decades? It's not like he's the handsomest, the smartest, the funniest, the richest. He's has no redeeming qualities. That's the part I don't understand. But think of other Cult leaders. Manson, Jim Jones to name a couple of them. They didn't have anything of value that any of us saw to follow them either. Maybe it's not so much what Trump has, but what his supporters don't have. Plenty of articles out there about the mentality of a Cult follower.

What is his appeal? Just look at ChistoFascist who appear to want him to help facilitate war in Israel to fulfill some stupid mis-interpreted prophesy so that their mythical Jesus can come, take them to heaven and then start slaughtering the rest of us.

There are a lot of people like this in USA and their leaders promote this. Why? ???????

I’m not religious at all so I can’t explain the mindset. Many, not all religious people, are also cult people. I think that the human mind can be fearful. That’s what has protected us as a species since we evolved. There are many things that we can’t explain such as what happens when you clinically die. Throughout history, man has worshipped multiple Gods, made sacrifices to Gods and now we seem to be down to one God per religion. I think religion for some is a comfort. When someone dies, you hear comments “oh he’s in a better place”. “I’ll be able to be with him someday after I die”. Religion also keeps it’s worshippers in line. You’re threatened with hell if you step out of line on earth. I think if a person can find comfort in the good and bad of life by believing in religion, then good for them. The problem is, that many are not content to just use it in their personal lives. They want to cram it down our throats and have laws passed according to their beliefs. There lies the problem. They are stepping all over our boundaries with their beliefs. I see how the Evangelical fringe has taken over Christianity in this country since I grew up. Rather than leaning more towards a progressive attitude towards religion as some other countries in the world have done, we are going backwards almost to Pilgrim times. So much of it is utterly hypocritical. Do what I say, don’t do what I do. That’s the part that I can’t stand the most.

Shocking News Report: Parade Float Condemned for depiction of a simulated lynching in a children’s parade

A horrifying depiction of a parade float featuring Donald Trump as a fascist figure, dragging Kamala Harris in chains behind the float, has sparked outrage,Fox News Carolina reported.

The display is unacceptable and normalizes violence. Such portrayals have no place in our society. https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wdbj7.com%2Fvideo%2F2024%2F11%2F01%2Fparade-float-depicts-harris-chains%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR32sMqllqFl3Cdu38yMYlAPpbYp1LGN4rOD87kMi9Toh5qi2jHcFnQtJdI_aem_Pd7TECuBysrm4VaRiI7N6w&h=AT0ReDn3wy-sYij1SsbsGpz1PvtAufLgnCZuXI19JgDgdy2dDQyTaLdO88y2VEZyvEFhybQRN8Q5_JCFkg6ZO9Ssx5yP9k6lNG5-QpvxJP69gBSSfTroyBNjmhycR8WQXYxS-Uo&__tn__=%2CmH-R&c[0]=AT1X7Gw0EV8VmLCnby1nF-A03kaMXuZClyPRDNLQ7VfO6uU1_LF4w6tQnRFX5S1Ng2t3x_6YzCYZuL_SHFCueIPrPa5_8LZN_uZrqi1fWaCVWbqK9-Hg0-uAgF4SnmuxytUL03VzQof-TcuAOPaMR0KLsH7_lj0P8GLV0jrtE7_u39JrpEbSh16kBtUoNbd9D-KaTvis-UR76TyHNWVwBMk.
