This is my first year as a poll worker. I worked our local primary this summer and am bracing myself for Nov. 5. Wish me luck!

Respect for doing this! Hopefully all will go smoothly and there will be as few nutcases as possible :)

Boris, Yes, every poll worker deserves our respect and gratitude. And, we voters need to appreciate them when we go to vote, acknowledging their service, maybe even considering doing the job next time. All poll workers, be aware, but not scared because those who hate this nation want fear to reign so people will support the fascists they would like to vote into power. Please don't accommodate them!

Yes but not all poll workers in this election might have ulterior motives! That’s what worries me about this election! Never thought until 2016 that we really had to worry about it. Now I’m not so sure! I don’t trust Trump and his minions to be on the up. He’s always played dirty and he will continue to play dirty!

Expand full comment

Julie, there are probably a few poll workers somewhere who have ulterior motives and will do whatever they can to cheat for Trump, but if all poll workers look out for the votes of the American people and are sure all of their team is working for the voters, not for the candidates, the election will be safe and fraud-free, as usual. I know the poll workers can set fear aside and do their jobs the best they can. It is that kind of care that will keep any potential saboteurs at bay.

I am a poll worker. You are correct.

Hopefully, any "cheaters" are caught and punished to the "fullest extent of the law!", as Donald would say it.

That's why you have more than one pollworker from each party—at least where I've worked! Admittedly I've never been a pollworker for The People's Democratic Republic of Alabama or Montanastan, but even states that privately pride themselves on their rabid Right Wing partisanship like those two at least want the ILLUSION of "fair elections"....

With one or two exceptions, even the most partisan pollworkers I've met leave their partisanship at the door on Election Day. Most pollworkers don't become pollworkers unless they believe in the the system over party loyalty—I started out as a Republican(!) pollworker because I was an Independent, and apparently there weren't enough REAL Republicans where I lived who were willing to bother! (I finally changed to the Democratic Party when my former wife and her niece, who's bisexual, dumped a bunch of anti-choice and anti-LGBT literature the local Republican Party kept sending in front of me and said, "Change parties, we're sick of this shit!")

Poll watchers are not allowed within 15 feet of poll workers, they are not allowed anywhere the voting machines and the PD will be called by the Poll manager should they become disruptive in anyway. There are federal and state rules listed in the " Poll Workers" handbook regarding what is allowed & what isn't.

Expand full comment

I had a couple of so-called poll watchers representing one of the candidates who stood in the doorway as I broke down the ballot machine after the primary voting, and they were obnoxious. They rattled me a bit. They rattled my Republicans coworker even more. Then they asked us to give them a copy of the final tally receipt of the votes, I told them firmly “Absolutely not” They are not allowed to have or touch anything!!

Expand full comment

This is good to know. Are there guards on the premises too?

Expand full comment

There will be in Phoenix and Tucson. We usually have at least one cop watching the door, but Nov 5 will be heavily guarded, especially in Phoenix with the vote counting center now behind 7 ft spike fences with drones and rooftop snipers. Thanks to MAGA ass hats and Cyber Ninjas.

Not in the past, although in one precinct our chairperson was a retired NYC police officer. And we do have officers stop in all through the county to check on us. We all have the Board of election number on our cell phones.

Expand full comment

It depends on the laws in your state. In NJ, we would leave a results tape on the table that everyone could see.

Expand full comment

The chairperson is allowed to read the results at the end of the night. But no one is allowed to walk off with one. I don’t know the reasoning. Maybe they worry about someone altering them.

WTG! I was a pollworker in upstate NY for nearly two decades, but when I moved to New Jersey after my marriage broke up I tried to join down here, and nobody from the Division of Elections ever returned my calls.... 🤷‍♂️

This is the first Federal election in a while when I don't have to get up before dawn to set up the polls, and I can actually vote at the polls rather than by absentee ballot. I think that, assuming we HAVE elections after this (so vote for Kamala Harris and send Mary's insane uncle to prison where he belongs!), I'll see if it can be true that, for a change, I live in a place with more people WANTING to be pollworkers than they have spots for.

Thank you for doing this! Anyone who believes there is election fraud clearly flunked civics and had never worked the polls. It’s idiocy, and I am hoping that everyone who has perpetrated the big lie will meet this same fate.

Oxford, good for you! Now, make the voting experience fun and special for all the people who come to your polling place. That's what my sister and other family members do at their polling place. They have high turnout each election because people like the atmosphere and how much fun they have while voting. They also like how seriously the whole team takes voting, even chasing folks down to be sure they got their "I voted" sticker.

As a poll worker, I appreciate your support. I've been working at the polls (except during the pandemic) for the past 16 years. We're not volunteers in my area; we get $150 for the day, from 6:00 am to the a$$ end of whenever all the paperwork is done and we can go home -- the record being before 9:00 pm, but it's never less than that, and often more. It's close to being volunteer work, but I love every moment (except the paperwork!) and making sure everyone gets the chance to vote. We go our of our way to help voters in the wrong precinct, cheer for young first-time voters, welcome new-to-us voters who have moved into our area. And it's exhilarating and scary and more thrilling than the most creative roller-coaster. I've bought my blue pantsuit, added a "proof I'm a patriot" little flag pin, and I am ready to toil in the vineyards of democracy. Please thank your poll workers, defend them if they're being harassed, and join them if you can.

Thank you for your support! I don't need more money, but being able to split the day between workers or have a couple of breaks would be fantastic. The issue here is that we have to sign the "zero tapes" at the beginning of the day and the "final tapes" (both strips of paper, like CVS receipts) to certify them. It does seem that we could sign in and out somehow, but for now we're stuck. And I'm in Allegheny County, PA, Pittsburgh's county, so every vote, every worker, really matters. This year, it's like being handed the starter's pistol, the stop-watch, and the winner's cup and being told it's all up to us. It isn't, of course, but the responsibility feels huge.

I started during the pandemic as a ballot machine operator. There at 5 am in NEw York, and home by midnight. In a very red and chaotic district. It was an eye opener, and I have been doing it ever since. Everyone was appreciative of us being there so they could vote. And we clap for first time voters too. I have a feeling there will be many first timers this year. I start on our first day if early voting this Saturday.

Being a poll worker, this ruling couldn’t come at a better time. I won’t be intimidated but I will, if necessary, take names and find a high-powered attorney to take the offenders to the fking cleaners. FAFO maga ‘poll watchers’. Fair warning. Cameras are not permitted in polling places for the privacy and individual rights of citizens. This is what happens in fascism: We begin to put cracks in our foundational rights in the name of "safety". Instead we erode our true values and guardrails.
