Lost my unvaccinated dad on the 19th to bad ideas and fantasies. The world definitely feels colder this week, and on more than one level, so Aimee's 4th song will do the trick. That particular holiday is the epitome of fantasists peddling nonsense.
I can relate to doom scrolling and gaining weight. Obsessively reading trying to find something to be hopeful about. Things are much better now but I can't kick the doom scrolling habit. I can't imagine what you must've felt like when it was your uncle you were doom scrolling about. I hope now that he's gone you have some peace.
A year ago I had an Afib episode at my parent‘s summer home that I inherited with my two brothers, one of whom assaulted me physically and psychologically throughout my childhood. He was a product of a tyrannical father who terrorized all of us. I sold my share of the home, and know I will never set foot in that place again. This recognition has been a godsend. Reading your stories are a godsend. They validate my experiences, and are reassuring to me. I deeply appreciate your wisdom and courage. I look forward to listening to Aimee Mann. Her music is new to me. Thank you Mary.
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You Mary for all that you have done and are doing to help save our democracy! Like those in the military serving and protecting, you have been on the front line, Bravely holding your own up against Donald and All his cronies. I/We can’t Thank You enough and we’ll be forever Grateful for you risking all and pulling back the curtain and
My mother can’t forgive me for not inviting my unvaccinated sister to a family get together LAST summer. I’m a nurse and she and her two sisters are in their 80’s so…. I just can’t. The wife and I made reservations to eat out and just moved into our new home!
Being tinged with PTSD myself, Aimee Mann has always spoken to me. Nora Jones is another, Melissa Etheridge and Pink. There’s something about her. Enjoy your holiday doing whatever it is you do.
I so appreciate your candor and admire your courage in sharing your struggles. Especially around mental health, it’s so important. And also the songs - I’m learning about so many artists! (Though I’m starting to suspect I live under a rock re: music…). My twofers today: London Grammar, Strong and Big Picture
Oh gosh! I had no idea Aimee had a new project out. I'll download it immediately as I have and love everything she's ever done, both with 'Til Tuesday and solo, and have never been disappointed.
I love her song called It's Not. It so encapsulates how I've felt at times regarding feeling the paralysis of indecision and indirection in life:
"So here I'm sitting in my car at the same old stoplight.
I keep waiting for a change, but I don't know what.
I've loved Aimee Mann since the days of Voices Carry as well. I had no idea she had a new album out. Been listening non-stop since I read this blog last week. Such a great album! um...oh...sorry...showing my age. Such a great CD! oh...wait...I love streaming this music! There...that'll do it.
I always loved the song Voices Carry, too! Music is such a major part of me, it would be impossible to pick one song in any genre. But, today I pick an oldie I used to listen to from my parent’s collection when I was young. Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66, So Many Stars. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L0fr0Z5HUQU
Gonna go old school here: Shawn Colvin, "Shotgun Down the Avalanche", " Suicide Alley". There comes a point in time every however often, when I just gotta hear 'em, preferably in the context of the entire disc, but in a pinch, individual songs will do. She is a master poet, weaving devastating blues with transcendent hope.
Just started listening to Adele30, after having been a fan for years. This album is so good. So heartfelt and so real. Worth adding to your playlist, but get ready to grab the tissues.
Aimee Mann really deserve to be known in Europe ! It is good to have a moonshot. Dream on, dream big, in 2024 the pandemic is over and many unknown musicians from both sides of the pond and from everywhere will come to Normandy to celebrate the 80th anniversary of D-Day and come to the light they deserve !
Summer of ‘75 I was working at a camp for the blind. I was a cook. The kitchen staff were all kids who had been campers. The big hit that summer was “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do.” When it played on the radio in the kitchen, we all stopped what we were doing and sang as if our hearts were breaking. I still listen to it, all the way through, wherever and whenever I hear it.

Sorry for your loss.
Thank you.
So very sorry.
I live in fear of the same thing happening to some of my family members. I'm so sorry you have to deal with that loss.
The hardest part was losing them to conspiracy thinking and then being helpless when it took a life. So pointless and preventable.

So red turns into green, turning into yellow.
But I'm just frozen here on the same old spot.
And all I have to do is press the pedal.
But I'm not. No I'm not."

...and then there's her version of Coldplay's 'The Scientist'! (insert major heavy sigh here).

A tear, a smile, a sigh...thank you, Mary. This felt good....
