To me, we now have renewed hope for our country. That's worth shouting about, we won't go back!

Hope and optimism are back in play!

I love Harriz/Walz. I just love them. This is a movement about hope, joy, optimism, and KINDNESS. I can’t believe how much has changed in a couple weeks!

I could not be happier about this ticket. Both Harris and Walz represents two sides of the same progressive coin: a woman of color from the city, and a white guy from the country. And both have very progressive records that are focused on taking care of THE PEOPLE, not giving corporations massive tax breaks and giveaways. Nothing could be more perfect.

The contrast is so stark: Trump ticket is nothing but doom and gloom. The complete opposite and absolutely soul draining. This is so refreshing. Kamala/Walz are offering more than policy!

Trump is having a hard time fighting Against JOY like Kamala's laugh because that is what Americans want to feel again! Make America Laugh Again.

I want wear this funny 2024 election shirt everyday until November 5 👇

We've forgotten how to be joyful. And every time Kamala Harris smiles or laughs, I feel like that's possible again. It's good to feel GOOD again!

Trump is saying the country is a failure, that crime is out of control and that it's overrun with immigrants from insane asylums and prisons. This dystopia scenario also includes a broken economy and whatever blah blah Trump makes up in his sick mind. I cannot stand even the sight of a photo of this crackpot.

Expand full comment

That’s been his whole schtick ever since he started speaking politically. trump constantly denigrates this country. And he foments fear to roil anger to instigate the potential of violence. I think it’s clear that he doesn’t care at all about the country. I am beginning to think he hates the country.

Expand full comment

I think it's more that he wants the country for his very own to prove what power he believes he owns in that sick mind of his. JD is just another Dan Quayle lapdog for us to laugh at and for King Donnie to throw under the bus with a pair of couch cushions. Wasn't that a disappointment to learn that couch issue was made up by a stranger?

Anyway, now that we're getting our voices back, we can now govern our nation again and keep a close watch on our elected officials because now we can decide to throw anyone out who breaks the Oath of Office even once. After all, it's our money paying them.

He hates democracy, the idea that the people choose not only who represents them but through those people, what the government does. For example, if you hate the poor, you're not about to advocate for programs and spending that will elevate them out of poverty. I don't think Trump hates America, but he is a miserly bastard who thinks spending money on anything that doesn't help his rich buddies stay rich and get richer. Really, a guy who has more money than he can spend in whatever time he has left to live getting jealous over giving kids free school breakfasts and lunches is a pathetic Scrooge type. No, Trump actually doesn't even know enough about what America is, to hate it. All he wants is to use it to benefit himself. He's a criminal.

Expand full comment

Marycat, you're probably right about Trump not necessarily hating America. He doesn't even care about America except as a broad concept. He resents that he can't use and abuse his workers as he used to, but that's a result of his deciding to run for office and people start looking at one's behavior. He has always had everything he needs and enough people to get it for him. He has never worked, I mean really worked, not just ordered people around and signed things. He can't even begin to relate to anyone who doesn't have as much as he does. He has always been dismissive of everyone else and I have no doubt he will continue to do that until his dementia totally takes over. He thinks his handlers are working for him when in reality, I think he is their puppet and as long as they keep doing what he wants and stay out of the way, he won't notice that they are manipulating him. It's sad that so many people have no idea what and who Trump has become and our corporate media are happy to keep pumping out the idea that Trump is "normal" when in reality as Tim Walz says, Trump is weird and so are the sycophants who hang around him.

Expand full comment

Maybe when Trump ends up in a residential facility someday, he'll finally have some gratitude and respect for the underpaid people who change his soiled diapers. There's a lot of dementia in his family so it's a likely scenario. All the money in the world won't give back the life he wasted on grifting and selfishness.

Expand full comment

Stephanie, yes, Trump hates the country that has given him everything anyone could want, most of which he didn't deserve. It will never be enough, though and he wants to drag everyone down with him, then blame Democrats and anyone else he can remember for the downfall. What a Toddler!

Expand full comment

I really hope he very visibly throws up all over himself on live national TV. (I mean DT, but also JD, now that I think of it) His hardcore base won’t care, but I think many of us would love to see him REALLY be embarrassed.

Expand full comment

When he originally announced his slogan in 2016, I found it highly offensive. America has always been great!

Expand full comment

Marycat, the problem is that Trump can't seem to experience joy and any good feelings he seems to get come from doing harm to or insulting someone with a "clever" adjective in front of their name. Trump wants to claim he was a great president but even the Trump-obsessed media have to acknowledge he was a terrible president and accomplished nothing positive for this nation except maybe, at the start of the pandemic, encouraging the trials for the COVID vaccine. He did not follow through, though with pushing people to get the vaccine and to wear masks in public spaces and a lot of folks died because they listened to him and fools like DeSantis who claimed people have the right to infect people if they want to. "it's a free country, you know." I am so glad people are wanting to look for joy instead of the hatred, anger, fear, and resentment that permeate Republican rallies, platforms, and attitudes these days. Let's go for the joy!

Expand full comment

You just described what a sociopath is. Trump, by the way, probably encouraged the vaccine development and fast-tracked it for PR purposes. Remember, it was an election year. He still lost, a fact he has privately acknowledged but publicly denies. Now he's saying that Biden will show up at the Democratic convention and try to "reclaim the nomination" from Harris. Trump is seriously delusional yet the media is still ignoring it.

No wonder we are enjoying this wonderful, joyful campaign. Instead of lunacy and dystopian pronouncements, we hear messages of hope, kindness and good humor from our candidates. This messaging will bring in the votes of people who have felt tired out from it all. It also looks like the world is with us. Biden paved the way to this moment, and I hope people realize it. Heck, Jimmy Carter, who will be 100 in October, told his grandson that he is doing his best to stay alive just to cast his vote for Harris and Walz.

Expand full comment

Marycat, yes, Trump is a sociopath, but not all sociopaths are as rabid as he is about power and money-grubbing. You are also right that Biden has led us to where we are now, and despite Trump's lies, we are doing pretty well. Unfortunately not all of us are and that is an issue Harris and Walz will have to seriously tackle when they take office. I am so pleased Jimmy Carter is still around to remind us all of what a good man looks like and I pray he will live long enough to vote for Harris and Walz and the other Democratic candidates who will work hard with all of us to bring about a better world. Down with Trump and Vance and their lies, insults, and negativity!

One additional tidbit re J.D. Vance is the comment Donny made to a journalist (I think) about Vance being a bad choice. He said it doesn’t really matter, because the VPOTUS is an inconsequential player … especially in an election. What an idiot! I guess he holds the notion that EVERYONE is inconsequential compared to him but even so … what a doofus way to make his bad choice seem okay.

Meanwhile Tim Walz is ROCKIN’ IT … and is definitely a very consequential partner for Kamala Harris. He has an amazing capacity for reading the energy in the room, matching it and then unleashing it in ways that serve the common good. He takes them where they want to go! One of his favorite words seems to be “Wow”, and that word applies perfectly to him.

Harris and Walz work amazingly well together now … and they’re just getting started. I cant wait until they’re in office! Imagine what that will be like!

One of the comments here made a point about “now that we’ve found our voice”. That is indeed how this feels. And what a great feeling it is.

Agree with you, how do you think we can better address and discuss the real issues facing the country without falling into extreme or divisive language?

Expand full comment

Calling them creepy and weird is acceptable.

Expand full comment

It's aptly descriptive and readily understandable. We discuss issues, sure, but a lot of Americans' eyes glaze over when discussions get too complex. That obsession with pushing issues as election strategy has made the Democrats look, to some voters, snobby and elitist. Using "creepy and weird" is apt as well as easily remembered by voters. It's good strategy.

Sol, we can insist on the truth and start insisting on honesty in business practices and call out businesses who abuse their customers by price gouging, shrinkflation, hidden charges, and other cheats. We can demand our various media stop acting like Trump and Kump are "normal" and start calling lies lies. That would be a beginning. It might be divisive at first, but if people see they have been deliberately used by Trump and rich corporations, they might want to move into the light of joy and appreciation of others instead of fear and resentment of others.

Expand full comment

The president isn't really responsible for inflation. Ask why the Federal Reserve (which is not part of our government) has allowed inflation to continue post-pandemic. Originally, inflation was triggered by supply issues during the pandemic, but corporations learned during that time period that they can raise prices with impunity because there are few regulations against it. And shrinkflation means we spend the same amount for smaller packages. So we have to buy those items more often. The quality of many items such as clothing has gone to hell, too.

Expand full comment

Ruth, you're absolutely right—insisting on truth and honesty is a crucial first step. Calling out unethical business practices and media complacency is essential to holding those in power accountable.

It might be tough at first and could cause division, but shining a light on the truth can lead to greater awareness. When people realize they’ve been manipulated, it could inspire a shift towards unity and a more positive, joyful approach to life.

It’s a tough road, but a necessary one.

Sandy, I am not sure about the higher morals. If one has "higher morals," they could not possibly support Trump. He has committed a lot of crimes, cheated, lied, broken every one of the 10 commandments he claims to love so much. There are people out here who claim to be christian or moral or something when they are none of that; they are opportunists and Trump has given them the opportunity to let out their real self into a world that really does not want that "real" self. They could wake up and acknowledge what they already know, that Trump is an incompetent ignoramus who cares for no one but himself and thinks he should be able to do whatever he wants with no consequences, like a toddler who has bad parents who choose not to stop the bad behavior because "isn't he so cute!"

Thank you, Mary for another excellent post. I read sometime ago that Sarah Palin was thrust on John McCain y the RNC, which makes sense to me since John McCain was a respectable man of intelligence, I can't imagine him on this own selecting a witless bimbo as a running mate. She appealed to the same crowd of nincompoops as the current MAGAts.

Expand full comment

Hi, Fay. A few years ago, Steve Schmidt wrote an enormous piece on the selection of Sarah Palin. For years he had been dogged by criticism and Meghan McCain. One day he had enough and let it rip. While I don’t remember the specifics of who else was involved, Schmidt clearly wanted his name cleared. Palin was brought to McCain’s home in Sedona, they went on a walk, and McCain returned with her and it was a done deal. Steve Schmidt became a never-Trumper prior to 2016. Nicolle Wallace had also worked on the campaign and was a never-Trumper. I’m pretty sure it was either his personal Substack, or The Bulwark. Schmidt used extremely frank language while denying Sarah Palin had anything to do with his strategic plan. I wish I could recall more. But in the end, McCain chose Palin. I’m sure there are archives.

Expand full comment

McCain spoke most highly of Palin's husband. A Daily Show joke was that McCain picked her because of his enormous respect for Mr. Palin.

People have also noted that, while VP Harris obviously delights in Governor Walz, her husband and Walz get along like a house on fire. The chemistry between them involves their family dynamic, not just the principle decision makers.

Thank you, for clearing that up.

If you can find the post, it’s a great, informative read. Also highlights a lot of stuff that happened in that 2008 campaign. But man, Steve Schmidt let it rip. This is a bit off topic, but I sure enjoyed hearing blunt facts. I think it’s also why Meghan McCain stepped back a bit. Her parents were very unhappy with her. Very well written rant about that campaign.

Expand full comment

Actually, I don't think so. During that campaign she was nothing close to Trump's evilness and the maga types didn't surface 'til the Obama. administration. Sarah P was Newt Gingrich's gift to the Republicans and John McCains pain in the butt.

Actually, Palin came in with the Tea Party — the forerunners of the MAGA party. And don’t forget she led a chant at one of McCain’s rallies to “let them die” to the question of not giving life saving medical attention to those who had no health insurance.

No one seemingly matches Trump’s evilness except maybe Putin. But Steve Schmidt was head of the campaign at the time Palin was picked. Wiki shows that. Google for the Schmidt rant, I assure you it’s worth reading. It was written prior to 2020 election when The Lincoln Project had original members. Maureen, I’m confident of what I’m sharing here. I believe Steve posted on a Sunday and it was full of info and one particular word that begins with F. Tea Party surfaced with Obama, and the racists came out of the closet after 2016. Tea Party movement started in 2009.

One hundred people showed up at Vance’s rally today

and fifty of them were news

media. They have got to look at the Harris Walz movement and know they are going to lose.

I hope voters prevent Donald and creepy JD from ever getting on Joe and Kamala's planes.

WHY did the Secret Service let the sleezy Vance gang go up to the VP's plane??? So outrageous!!

As a candidate himself, JD has SS protection.

He was supportive to his friends in college, one who transitioned. His writing displayed genuine intelligence, but some myopia that may be because his family was abusive. He loved his grandmother.

Well supportive as in did a kind deed when the person was sick, but has now denied LGBTQ+ rights, so that’s not exactly supportive.

I would venture to surmise that (1.)Trump is hold up in one of his golf clubs because he is glued to the TV watching the fabulous, intelligent, energetic Harris-Walz team hold rallies with incredible crowds in attendance; and (2.) that he now lacks the stamina to campaign at the speed of Harri-Walz. So he's sending his younger henchman to do the so-called campaiging for him. Looks like the Trump-Vance campaign strategy is to stalk the Harris-Walz team and spew dirt at their backgrounds and policy-rich, values-packed campaign speeches. Like bullies on the playground. A loser strategy for sure.

Exactly. US politics never has a vice presidential candidate debate a presidential candidate--they're running for completely different jobs. Vance's attempt to push himself to the forefront wouldn't happen without approval. Trump is *that* scared of being dressed down by a sharp tongued younger black woman. He's the one telling Vance to challenge her, I bet. Just as Trump didn't actually fire people personally, he had someone else do it.
