His long awaited smiting is at hand.

Trump gives the same speech every time: lies, whining, juvenile name calling of victims, dick measuring over crowd size, waxing poetic about Hannibal Lector, boring stories about his golf game. If he keeps talking, he becomes boring and fumbles. His lies are stale and his crowd cannot be as big as Kamala’s.

On the other hand, the positive feeling is coming from all directions: the campaign’s epic messaging, the charisma of the principals, their warmth and enthusiasm, the polls, the enthusiasm of the Dems…it IS a positive feedback loop, since every element bolsters the other elements.

Harris trends up…...Trump trends down…… Clearly we have momentum!

That's why this "Kamala removes orange stains" t-shirt is perfect for these times 🤣 👇

http://libtees-2.creator-spring.com/listing/votek

Harris's joy is helping to drive younger voters to sign up to vote and to volunteer for her campaign. Elections are won by the candidate who expresses optimism of the future not doom and gloom. Harris is a refreshing joyful warrior that's talking about a better future for the nation. Trump's boring old act of whinning and complaining has worn out the majority of voters and people are rejecting his negativity.

I feel like the when Obama first ran, that enthusiasm did not seem to quell. Let’s hope the joy remains until November!

I think that smiting began the minute that President Biden nominated V.P. Harris for president.

Expand full comment

I could never have imagined all this was going to happen these last few weeks. I was ready to give up after the shitty assassanation attempt, but Trump seems to have used up the last of his karma dodging that bullet and its veen all downhill for his campaign from there. God bless Biden, he saved the country by beibg selfless, what a guy.

Yes history should be clear about what a dangerous time these TRUMP years were and how Biden saved the day by winning won in 2020 - got us al thru Covid saved the economy- made the US a world leader in energy production- and managed to pass pass infrastructure bills and so much more without contorting the House and barely having control of the Senate strengthened NATO - Union's in the US helped Ukraine and Israel from being overrun etc and in the midst of being ill wiht Covid and getting hostages freed he he put country first by allowing Harris to replace him so he could continue his full time efforts to keep all the worlds bad Actors from starting wars while here in the US Biden set up this exciting positive movement so the Dems can destroy the MAGA movement and save our Democracy. What accomplishments. How lucky we all are Biden has been our president. How lucky we are that Veep Harris is also a visionary who can lead us all forward and not back into a MAGA Project 2025 past..

Mary, thank you for everything you’ve done to “interpret” and open our eyes to the psychopath that your Uncle truly is. The truth is, he had been in an alternate reality his entire life. He was just a master at dragging other people into his reality. Starting with the gossip columnists he sucked in, and Mayor Ed Koch with Trump Tower, NYC DA Robert Morgenthau , to Kelly Anne “Alternative Reality” Conway, to Lindsey Graham and all the other people eager to romp in his kitschy fever-pitch circus.

Yes. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. His base is so brainwashed that they actually believe his lies and exaggerations. They don't bother to fact-check him because that would destroy their narrative of him as being their hero, and they apparently believe everything that he and the rightwing media say.

The left isn't perfect by any means, but they're not the ones peddling hostility and hate, although the right will claim that. What I have heard from the left pales in comparison to the right's rhetoric. It's Trump's ego that has been injured and they're defending it as if it's their own. Trump's "poor me" schtick is getting old with them by now, I imagine. I would hope that they'd want to hear more about his plans for the future, not rehashing the 2020 election lies and bashing the left. It's time to move forward from this disaster and let this country heal and it's going to take cooperation from both parties to make that happen. Time for them to reach across the aisle again to get things done. "United we stand, divided we fall" and fall we will if this continues.

Most of the Trump supporters I know are outliers and losers, people who have never felt successful, accepted or powerful, and often felt overlooked and scorned. A lot of them were bullied as kids, they're angry and full of hate and they want to make others as miserable as they are. Trump has always said the quiet parts out loud, even bragged about them, so it normalized their anger, racism and misogyny and he made them feel they are part of the "in" crowd that was calling all the shots. They invested money, body and soul in him, destroyed families and friendships over him, broke the law for him and reveled in thumbing their noses at everyone. Now that the cheese is obviously sliding off Trump's cracker and he's looking more and more like a demented loser, like Trump himself, they just can't bring themselves to admit that they were wrong, give up their dream that they'd finally be on the side of the ones wielding the whips and crawl back under their rocks.

Many of his supporters, whom I know, like him based on the myth that he had the greatest economy ever and that Biden's is awful. With their tight social conformity and obedience (Milgram), they won't speak out against Trump among their peers, even though not all of them benefited from his "policies". They have blamed Biden for the horrible economy from day one of his administration when there was absolutely no way he could have had that effect in such a short amount of time. It was explained to me that each incumbent president's policies are those of the previous ones for the first couple of years, until his own policies take effect. So, while Trump INHERITED a stable economy, he left Biden with a mess of his own making with Covid and his tariffs. Given what they were left with, I think Biden's administration did a good job at getting us to a manageable situation, even though they won't admit it. If things continued along the trajectory in which they were headed in the Trump administration's only term, many of us in the lower income brackets, like those of us who are disabled and/or retired without adequate savings., would have been much worse off. The middle class would have disappeared altogether as corporations and the wealthy received all of the tax breaks, and as the cost of everything went up for many reasons, those in the lower income brackets, were the ones who felt it the most. Any of those tax breaks did not result in corporations hiring more people and lowering their prices, as they were intended. The corporations kept their prices high, seeing that people had to find a way to pay them anyway. Yayyy!! He really does "love" us as he said. :/

Oh, I know that they are following him simply because he's a republican, but it's because they hate the democrats so much. Little do they realize, perhaps, that he switched from being a democrat to being a republican shortly before tossing his hat into the ring to run as a republican. That's right; he isn't really for a party other than his own. He used us to enrich himself when he refused to divest himself from his business assets as he was supposed to and instead said he would donate his salary to charity because he was so rich. Instead of his $400K/yr presidential salary that we paid for with our tax dollars, he made millions as he held state and international meetings at his hotels/resorts like the one (Mar A Lago) where he showed our top-secret documents. ANNNND we still got to pay for his salary to be donated to charity. We got to pay for it all!! What a guy; eh?

One thing I noticed about the Donald is that he has called both Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris "nasty." He uses this word exclusively to describe women who are strong and intelligent. He says Harris is "low IQ," which makes absolutely no sense as a descriptor of the former Attorney General for the State of California, a former US senator and the current vice president. He's reduced to such lies and to say she's "crazy" because she laughs like a person who actually has a sense of humor. I have never heard Donald Trump laugh, and have never seen a genuine smile on his face. He is so disconnected from the human race that he cannot figure out how to engage voters except through grievance and resentment. I know it's a close race right now, but I have never been more certain that he will lose, and bigly.

What a worthless sack of shit. And how wonderful to have this platform with like-minded people, where we don't have to plod through idiotic, defensive critiques of what we say.

So if he craps out before the election, would Vance step in and run for Pres?

Expand full comment

I saw the answer to that once but I don't recall. Would seem logical, especially closer to the election. Neither Republican is even a half-decent choice, IMO.

Expand full comment

I am worried that it will happen...that tRump will not be on the ticket for prez for some reason and they put JD in there...but I DO think that republicans think JD is too weird to win...the energy for Kamala is so strong, it just needs to stick!

Expand full comment

I think the rest of the republicans really don't like Vance, especially since his cat lady quote and other controversial statements.

Expand full comment

I don't see Independents going for Vance, nor Never Trumper Republicans. And frankly even some MAGA may be turned off by Vance, who lacks the charisma & ability to connect with the audience that Trump has. Vance has even less legitimacy as a presidential nominee than Harris has. He's never had any nationwide support as a presidential candidate, & only became a senator because of millions of dollars spent on his campaign by antidemocratic Thiel & other billionaires, & then VP choice from pressure by Thiel, Musk, Sacks & other billionaires as well as Trump Jr. of all people.

Mary, I’ve been a fan for a long time.I always find your insights helpful. Donald is clearly a narcissist - but what’s up with his followers? That he has any, at all, is unnerving. They can’t all be narcissists, can they?

There's something called Dependent Personality Disorder—it's a person who's looking for someone to solve all their problems. I didn't know that many millions had it. But there's so many major problems arising right now (climate crisis, war clouds), that there seems to be a bigger call for saviors.

IIRC Goebbels observed that "people want to be told what to do."

Expand full comment

But with Americans it seems very selective. I think a large number of Americans easily ask this question: “Who are you to tell me what to do?” American parents and teachers tend to hear that a lot.

Expand full comment

I think that applies only to people who have never become independent thinkers, possibly due to dumbed down education? There seems to be a major lack of ego strength in such people. IMO.

Yep, we have a dearth of critical thinkers or independent thinkers in the USA.

30%? Where did you learn that?

Expand full comment

I’m a scientist (was) and I also am a amateur historian and personality psychologist. I’ve been watching people and analyzing personality traits for 50 years. Yes, it is true the maybe 5% of people would admit to be under a dictatorship at first, but as what happened in Germany, and what’s happened in many other places, dictatorships come with great boons to a good number of people. Decisions and direction of country are made quickly. Hitler turned the German economy around in only a few years. The people loved it. He became a hero even though he was a dictator. There are certain personality types that are a lot more prone to be convinced of the merits of a dictatorship, especially when the country was impoverished for a number of years. Look at the MAGAts. In the US, many thought the Trump was too much in the beginning, but looked what happened! What happened in the US, was basically a rough script how dictators come into power.

NO, maybe 5%!!

You make a good point about Donald's followers, Lydia.

Thank you, Mary. 💙

Expand full comment

People don’t have to be narcissists to follow one.

The MAGA crowd have believed in Trump for a long time and don’t believe any negative stories about him.

The belief is so strong, they don’t even see what’s in front of their own eyes. Hitler’s followers failed to see that he looked nothing like the blond, blue eyed, tall and fit Ayran ideal he was promoting.

Trump’s backers are now stuck between a rock and a hard place. They can’t do the right thing, either because they’re also too blind to see, or are too afraid of the backlash to act.

What happens if, or more likely when, Trump has a complete breakdown is anyone’s guess. Given his physical state, a stroke or heart attack seems quite possible. Then they’ll be left with Vance…

Safe to say they all are, to some degree, idiots. But, upsettingly, I know a couple of highly intelligent people who support him in the name of being "conservative." And they warn me that Kamala is dangerous!

I have read and listened to some that I consider the "true conservatives," and they point out that the odious one is anything but conservative. I look at the two groups and even though I do not belong to that ideology I know which side I believe.

WHY OH WHY can we not get a damn amendment or whatever it would take to add to the pathetic short list of qualifications required to run for President? It’s ridiculous in the nuclear age to not officially examine candidates as to their psychological makeup and other fitness issues for such an enormous and powerful position in the world. It’s such an obvious need……who the hell is stalling this?

Expand full comment

The J6 committee is introducing laws with more stipulation, to run for President. We’ve never had a reason for amendments, we do now. We have to keep the senate, and have majority in the house. I believe after this election there will be less partisanship, and adopt ethics codes for SCOTUS. Bennie Thompson is introducing legislation to take away trumps lifetime secret service protection, and TFG’S pension

I think anyone who is criminal enough to go to prison should absolutely lose their secret service protection.

Re: either tests, or qualifications (which would inevitably be supported by tests) I can foresee two issues at least. 1) Who decides what material is on the tests? [Wealthy mostly Euro-Americans? Jews? African Americans? Latinas? Asian Americans? A group of the above? Congress? Trained psychologists?] 2) “Little issues” such as, does the second highest person automatically become VP candidate? Is there a threshold for acceptable or a range of scores?

I’m not opposed to standards of some sort but not sanguine about how difficult it might be.

This is a great column. Thanks Mary. My biggest worry now is how the entirely unscrupulous big money folks, counting on DJT for their continued tax breaks, will without the candidate's help create sufficient disinformation and confusion to tilt the faltering race back their way. Otherwise, looks like your clueless dear uncle is becoming crispy political toast.

I’ve read taxes will go up several thousand bucks for the middle class. It would be nice to see some actual projections on that fact if a billionaire tax cut comes to fruition. Those numbers are tangible evidence of the big lie, along with everything else. I would like to see that at a rally in the midwest.

Expand full comment

If rich people paid decent wages to their employees that brought them to their wealthy position AND paid their fair share in taxes, lives of millions would be improved and the country would be more firmly anchored to actual values.

Expand full comment

Of course you're right but the wealthy have always had to be forced to do the right thing. It was pretty much never voluntary. This isn't new. That they have been getting away with it for decades is new. There has to be a total overhaul of our current system. No more huge conglomerates so that 12 companies are actually running the country. They took apart AT&T and many others. That has to happen again.

Expand full comment

That did happen back in the FDR administration. It was called the New Deal. It led to the country’s biggest and strongest middle class ever. Conservatives screamed at FDR then, and have been working ever since Reagan to dismantle it— succeeding greatly. But I think their momentum has stopped, and the pendulum is swinging back to “We, the People,” with the Harris-Walz reset.

Expand full comment

Exactly so. And on top of it, a rich man is often referred to as “self-made”.

Expand full comment

I am a tax preparer. Even if Trump wins, taxes on the middle class will go up by several thousand dollars because most of the provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act signed into law by Trump in 2017 will expire at the end of 2025, and the increased standard deductions and better tax rates the middle class have been enjoying will go back to the way it was so they will have to basically pay it all back. Trump very cleverly made it look like the middle class was getting a nice tax break but only during his first and second terms, then it bounces back up to make the next president appear at fault. Rest assured, though, that the 1% won't be affected because their tax rates will still be very low by comparison. Just another scam by the orange grifter.

Expand full comment

i'm middle class, and my taxes went up by about $2000 when the tax law changed in 2017 due to losing all my deductions. and yes he did make it so it would get worse under the next president. hopefully they will deal with that next year.

Lowering taxes for the wealthy has been the Republicans battle cry, since forever. Look at your income taxes, compare them in accordance with which party has the presidency. That sounds like an appropriate solution, than relying on getting disinformation from anything outside a reliable news source
