She'd taken refuge at my local convenience store after having been beaten and pursued by two women and a man. One of them was about to go at her with a bottle when I decided to step in. I felt confident that I could take them on --- not only was I in top condition at the time but part of my work involved wrestling uncooperative pit bulls and Rottweilers into the bathtub. These bullies didn't scare me.
All it took was for me to step in front of them and say calmly "Don't fight". Their eyes widened and the cowards all ran.
I truly believe I must have had a host of angels behind me. I restored the woman's clothing that had been ripped off of her and put ice from the soda machine on her bloody face.
When the sheriffs arrived they wouldn't listen when I tried to say "But she's the victim!" as they treated her like some sort of criminal who deserved to have her face beaten to a pulp. I was all but shoved out of the way.
