I left my house at first light Friday morning and returned past ten o’clock that night, so I didn’t see the body cam videos until quite late, after I had already posted. I’m in the process of writing about what happened, the backdrop against which it happened but it’s hard in ways both simple and complex.

For now, here are the most important things to know about Tyre Nichols: He loved to skateboard. He was an aspiring photographer with a particular fondness for landscape photography and sunsets. He was close with his mom and father to a four-year-old son. He worked hard. He was twenty-nine years old. He was very, very loved.
