Why can't they be normal and stay out of people's lives? It's nobody's business if a woman that they don't know gets an abortion or their neighbors sexuality. Let people live their lives and find their own version of happiness.

I love this new “back away, they are weird” narrative— it’s accurate and effective, and they had their chance in Milwaukee to seem reassuringly normal. They failed.

#WeirdAF is now trending on Twitter, and I see a video of Eric Swalwell calling Trump “weird” and “creepy” and how his policies represent the past, while Kamala represents the future.

It looks like the Democrats have finally figured out how to get their sound bites out there consistently. Republicans have been doing this since forever. It’s refreshing to see Dems all on the same page.

This "Weird & Weirder" t-shirt is great 🤣 👇

It is encouraging that Democrats are doing better with the sound bites but there doesn't appear to be an organized effort. One of the strategies employed by the Obama presidential campairesponses. Was very effective was rapid response teams with people like David Axelrod and others on the team firing back immediately to any and all falsehoods put out by McCains people.

It was highly effective because they did not give the Republicans any time to make use of the claims because the Obama teams rebuttals shut down the Republican momentum.

Perhaps Obama could enlist some of his team to help put in place a similar rapid resonses team.

While the one liners are effective for an election I am more concerned with a fully developed strategy to address going forward after Nov 5. I trust the Democrat leadership to develop a defensive strategy to protect the citizens against:

1. A protracted election settled in the court. Quell violence if it exists.

2. Cleaning up ethical violations in SC, Congress, and Executive Branch.

3. Address all forms if Inequality in America.

This is just the beginning, not an all inclusive list.

Sandra:

That is already a very ambitious list.

Here's my concern --

A tolerable Democratic victory in November, but not a dramatic and undeniable repudiation of MAGA and affiliated re-Confederates.

In that case, expect sporadic violence around the country.

Then what? Who will be at the lines of contact, licensed to use force and holding weapons furnished by taxpayers? Local sheriff's deputies and police officers. And maybe even a few deputized posses. (Cf: Constitutional Sheriffs.)

And who has the authority to decide who gets prosecuted "with the full force of the law"? Your county prosecutor, of course!

Were your local sheriff and prosecutor elected because they understand the value of protecting citizens' civil rights? I doubt it.

All of this is my way of warning:

A mere win in November will not be adequate! Now is the time to call on all of our resources to crush the MAGAs and their flag-bearer, the felonious former obnoxious occupant.

A subset can infiltrate rallies, and hit back in the moment — all of it being done with a sense of joy, humor, and of course…mockery. :0)

I feel like they need those fits if anger because they don't have all the power and control. If you notice they want to control everything, womens bodies, schools and who is paying for them, what is taught in schools, (if it ain't white, heterosexual, and Christian you can't have it), all the guns and rules surrounding them, etc. It must all be in keeping with the Magat view of Christianity, and nothing else will do. Some of them will kill for that power, and they have linked theselves to Trvmp by espousing teachings from the pulpit as directed by the likes of Heritage Foundation, Federalist, Christian Nationalist, et al. They are bent on changing everyone to their idea of virtue, or else expel them from the country. I think they have this notion because they feel they are Right, that admitting any other thought to the contrary is too scary to think. So basically, fear preached from the pulpit continues to lend to their motivations. I hope the vote count is such a landslide that they see they are in the minority and that their way will not be followed. We are NOT going back!

Sandra, it is so sad that these people claim to be christian while christianity really centers on love if one reads scripture. Yet, they are so sure that if they do the tiniest thing "wrong" they will not reach Heaven. How very sad. A loving god would never do that to anyone. However, they come from a tradition that told enslaved persons their life here was hard, but when they got to Heaven there would be true joy (or some other such nonsense). It makes me so sad to see what christians have done to so many people over time. Maybe when a religion becomes a majority, it inevitably turns whatever the main beliefs are into something to beat people over the head with. We see that in Buddhism too, particularly in Myanmar where Buddhists are killing other Buddhists with impunity while telling believers they should not kill a fly. One way I once helped someone think through it was to ask them what they thought God was like and what scripture said was the most important commandment. She said love. So I asked what that meant to her and if a god who had love at the center would first of all condemn someone to someplace like hell for choices she had made. She said "no" and I prayed with her. You should know the woman was quite ill but torn up with grief and guilt over something she had done (I didn't know what). I went to see her the next day and the nurses told me she had passed overnight. Her blood pressure went back to normal and she seemed at peace for the first time in the three weeks she had been in the hospital. I consider that a true miracle that love brought to her. Maybe we can reach some of the most negative people by holding out some honest love to them and some questions about their faith and the way what they are believing and standing for do not mesh, and help to work through it to a better understanding.

Agreed. Honestly, I believe everyone is weird in one way or another-unique, individual, one of a kind. And that’s what diversity is all about-celebrating the differences. Speaking of creepy weird. From NPR:

“Actress Jennifer Aniston, who has spoken about her own fertility struggles, wrote on social media that she hopes Vance’s daughter is lucky enough to bear children one day.

“Vance slammed Aniston’s remarks in an appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show on SiriusXM on Friday, saying they were “disgusting because my daughter is 2 years old” and that even if she did have fertility problems down the road, “I would try everything I could do try to help her because I believe families and babies are a good thing.””

I find it more than a little creepy-weird that if Vance’s now two-year-old has fertility problems he would “help her all he can.” Doesn’t sound like he’s planning to raise her to be a thinking woman who would want to make her own decisions. To me, this is as icky as Trump saying he’d probably date Ivanka if she weren’t his daughter

Expand full comment

I did.

And I'm not concerned with what Mary says here, so much as the Democrats' use of the word to describe Republicans. The American Heritage Dictionary agrees with them, that the word often denotes something "Strikingly odd or unusual, especially in an unsettling way".

Nonetheless, most people I know use the word to mean someone or something that's just a bit odd, but often in a likable way. Maybe the people I know are not representative of Americans in general (they almost certainly are not, in some ways).

Much though I hate the Republican candidates, I think it is reasonable to be concerned about otherizing those who are different from what's considered "normal". I wrote separately that it is important for us "to question the rhetorical toxification of otherness. To those of us who’ve ever been bullied, those weirdos are our people and we must stand with them."

Expand full comment

I agree. In my circle, it's a badge of honor to be called weird because it's outside the norm, it's creative, it's authentic, it's original, it's freeing, it's quirky, ..

The Republican candidates are creepy and psychotic. Not sure how either of those would work as sound bites.🤷‍♀️

Thanks for the elucidation Joel. Makes a lot of sense. Today's world is polarising twixt hatred and compassion. Most of us yoyo, it's nature's way to reach resolution.... Peace, Maurice

I agree. It seems like a very juvenile expression and does not convey that these guys are very dangerous.

We’re dealing with Weird x10. See George Conway’s @paychoPAC24

Expand full comment

While that is true in the normal world, the Magas are determined to present themselves as the only normal available. They treat everyone who isn't in their cult as being weird. So I like using the term for them because it is the kind of thing that gets under their skin and stays there, festering, itching, becoming more than they can bear. And we all know that the term 'weird' is harmless. But they think it is horrific. Just think about how Katie Britt speaks: we know she is scary weird, like some demonic robot, but magas think she is the epitome of perfection. Magas think, How dare you call her weird! Katie is perfect. But we know Katie is seriously unwell.

Expand full comment

I understand what you’re saying. If it helps just think about our collective attention span for things of this nature. This strategy, effective as it sounds, may not make through a couple of press cycles before we are chasing the next shiny objects.

Expand full comment

Haha, you could be right about that!

I'm just pleased that people are at least thinking critically about it.

Expand full comment

Let’s forget about semantic nit picking such as redefining “weird” as some adjective that refers to friends with idiosyncrasies.

The point is to pin the an undesirable label on Donald et al. that sticks. Weird will stick. So will creepy. Yes he’s a psychopath. Use whatever you like. He is weak and he is weird.

The word that came to mind was perverse.

Trump has 70 election deniers in place to “certify” the election. He is planning the steal again.

What can we do?

Expand full comment

The difference this election is that Trump does not control the DoJ. Those who work to illegally undermine the election are going to be in a world of hurt, as long as WE keep the faith and all do the work to elect Vice President Harris as well as Democrats up and down the ballot.

Since Kamala Harris is giving our voices back we need to remember that we are a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

Our voices must be heard again so we can let all those dirty, weird creeps are not going to take our Democracy away; that we are demanding Life in Prison for all those traitors, including Justices who have abandoned the Rule of Law, all those who will allow the Christian Nationalists to trash our Constitution and rewrite to suit their ideals, the entire of the Heritage Foundation, and all the near 1,000 hate groups that would be a part of Donald's hand picked army. Project 2025 is the only document to be trashed.

I asked this very question on a Lincoln Party town hall. Rick Wilson said they’re prepared for this and one of the ways to combat it was to elect VP Harris in such overwhelming numbers that contesting the results would be laughable.

Expand full comment

A lot voted like he'll to elect Hillary yet the election was stolen. We need to know how our government is preparing to prevent Trump from stealing the election again.

Expand full comment

Yes, as per Rachel Maddow tonight, he is repeatedly telling his supporters that he doesn't need their votes, not to bother voting. He is planning to steal the election. This needs serious attention and publicity.

Expand full comment

As I see it, if he tells people not to vote, maybe they won't and that would make a democratic win that much more of a landslide. It seems to me that if one didn't have many votes it would be much more difficult to steal the election, especially since all the voter suppression laws are made by republicans against democrats.

Put him in a cage and cut off his media access.

I saw Rachel talk about that, too. Elizabeth Warren says that the solution is to have so overwhelmingly many voters vote that their efforst won't be enough to overturn the results, or refuse to certify them.

Well, the supreme court just gave POTUS many immunities. If Biden would play dirty, he could use one of those immunities and have Trump locked up or assassinated. We all know Trump will take advantage of any loopholes if he is re-elected, and will make himself a king! Hell at this point, Biden could call off the election.

Expand full comment

They won’t because they will choose what Biden can do and what can’t which will be different than with Trump. SC has already broken the law by manipulating the constitution. I’m not sure why they are getting off free which that immunity ruling.

Because there are no checks on the SJC. The while system of checks and balances we were taught as children would safeguard our democracy was unfortunately built on an honor system.

Mary makes the point that millions more voted for Biden than DJT in 2020. But what really frightens me is that so many millions voted for DJT. They have to be shown what they voted for. Them's my views.

There are a LOT of republicans jumping ship and will be voting for Harris. The only people voting for tRump are his cult and the millionaires. He's not picking up any new voters, quite the opposite, but Kamala and the Democrats sure are!

This is a mess for sure, but my mind veers towards DOJ and Secs of State. Very glad Rachel addressed this problem on a large forum. It's out there now.

I agree that these dishonest people have great plans to not certify the election or rig the results if Trump loses. His latest comments directed at Christian’s not needing to vote means there is some plan afoot. I sure hope the Dems also have a plan. Otherwise Biden:Harris can have a boatload of votes and they won’t be worth a tinker’s dam.

Leah LaSalla posted this opinion:

“I can tell you based on the research I've had to do and another still-frame of the bullet in motion that what injured Trump was the air displacement of the bullet.

If he'd been struck anywhere on the ear by the actual round fired from an AR-15 - even just clipped - it would have torn most of his ear completely off and possibly part of his face or scalp. AR-15s inflict their signature devastating degree of damage to living tissue because they fire small rounds at unbelievable velocity.”

And those rounds tumble, unlike a standard "rifled" firearm. It would have chewed his ear off. I'm thinking blood packet ala WWE.

Do you think Rachel Maddow was right about his subterfuge in the swing states tonight? Effing scary!

Expand full comment

In a way, 2020 was a,practice run in terms of stealing the election. Some of the swing states had principled Republican officials like Georgia’s Raffensberger who refused to go along with it. Trump’s backers have spent the last four years replacing them wherever possible.

Assuming Harris wins, Americans need to change the system. Get an independent organisation like our Electoral Commission in overall charge of ensuring a free and fair system, and use non-partisan local officials to oversee them. Scrap the Electoral College and end the political appointment of judges.
