Hello my friend, I just got a strongly worded email from a subscriber who expressed deep concerns that some of my recent work has been behind a paywall. In this way, they feel that I’m doing a disservice to the public. The writer was very passionate, and, even if the language did get a little colorful, I always welcome sincere, thoughtful feedback, because it tends to make this newsletter stronger, and me more mindful.
I am a paid subscriber and I have no problem if you don't give me special perks. I do it to support you, not to be privy to exclusive content. The future of our country is too important not to help you expose the truth.
"Serious" could be a closet MAGA plant/a spy from the St.Petersburg false information factory. Mary has the right to do what she needs to do in order to save democracy. Case closed!!!
Behind a paywall means you need to be a paid subscriber to read/see it. Mary does not put much behind a paywall and the subscription is only $6 per month. She’s so worth supporting if you can afford it.
Mary words her subscription info so well. $60 per year, or $5 per mo., the cost of one coffee. I know I can skip one take out coffee per mo. to learn from Mary. Love this community here. 💙
Hey I didn't get Paywall either! I had to look it up, and it appears to be a fancy way of referring to subscriptions. Somebody is trying to make a big deal out of nothing, and trying to be important. But, paywall is not really part of trendy lexicon at the moment, so the effort is lost. I read about 6 newspapers a day, NYT, WaPo, the big ones, and nope, that word is not common! Can't remember last time that I saw it, maybe pre computers? And that is my analysis of the goon that sent that nasty letter!
"Paywall" is when you click on a news link, and only the article title appears. NYT has one, as does The LA Times, San Fran Chronicles, and both of my area's local papers
Some people are just massive jerks, similar to Conald and his horrible children. It looks like his truth will finally be exposed. Let’s all get our popcorn ready🍿
To say nothing of the expensive education that Mary got in order to be able to speak with authority on the subject of her uncle's many mental disorders. Thank you, Mary.
as an artist I expect to be paid for my work. Mary is well within her rights to expect payment for her writings. I can't afford to pay for subscriptions as much as I would like to support the writers. Just as I cannot afford to buy some of my favorite artists/friends art. I don't ask for special favors. I just seek more info elsewhere. I appreciate Mary's efforts..we are all on the same page against her uncle!
Great comment! I know, right? Paywall? That's hilarious, considering what she is asking us to contribute. It's cheaper than most streaming apps! And the Paywall is used so infrequently, bless Miss Trump's heart! The heck with them, we know a good investment.
I too am a paid subscriber and forgot to add that to my comment of a few minutes ago. I am glad I can support your work and provide your family perspective and also professional view as to the seemingly destructive life of Donald Trump
Well said. I’m a Canadian 🇨🇦 paid subscriber, your neighbour to the North, if you will. I agree 💯. I would like to add that what happens in this election has an effect worldwide. I grew up on the Canadian side of Lake Huron and have family on both sides of the border. Mary, your newsletter keeps me updated on the political climate in the United States 🇺🇸 especially on Donald. You help me make sense of your laws regarding Donald situations. Keep on doing what you are doing.
Wendy, I was thinking about my wording after I posted and I realized I should have said "the future of the world," not just the country. You are absolutely right that what happens here will affect everyone. (I have family in Canada and the UK and I routinely send them news from here, which they don't always see where they are.)
100% correct. And our Americans need to wake up and understand how important this is. Trump needs to fade into the background and world matters need to regain their place in our daily conscience
Pierre Poilievre, Canada's Trump in waiting has come out against LGBQ, been endorsed by Alex Jones...now threatening to make cuts to the dental and pharmacare programs.
We are overwhelmed by US media and culture - trump has inspired copycat movement here in Canada. We'd like our chief influence to get back on track and then so will we
I’m so sorry. I hate what this guy has done to our country and our world. I pray that enough Americans wake up, come to their senses, and re elect Biden. Trump is an idiot AND he’s old.
Yes!! I mentioned that because of the attention paid to Biden’s age. Trump is also close to biden’s age, but in addition to that he is incompetent, corrupt and not interested in governing. And to me age is irrelevant. Biden’s done a great job
Not just Trump and not just Canada. Anarchy is a world wide problem and once it begins they feel strong enough to keep pushing it. Just remember when they take the microphone: "The empty barrel makes the most noise." Don't stand down to our Freedom."
This is crazy. Trump is an imbecile and the fact he ever gained traction and retains traction and influence is beyond my comprehension. Also I’m American and living with this nightmare. I’m sorry his cancer has spread
Yea sure.......Malcolm Nance talks about the worldwide connections between right wing, upstart extremism. You may want to expand your horizons beyond the shadow pResident Trump.
I don't think he actually wanted or needed Alex Jones' endorsement. Calling him Canada's Trump is stupid- something the Liberals are doing because they see that they are down in the polls and just hope people don't take the time to ascertain just what is true.
And please know, all Americans are NOT CRAZY, or do we endorse this person who actually stole the election from her. If only she had won...what a different world this would be for all of us....
Hi, Mary said we could donate a subscription so she can gift one. Maybe she can have a contribution button that we can donate to so others can get free subscriptions ♥️
Sally, and the others just above you in this discussion: on Mary's email, just above her signature, you'll find two buttons - one to gift a subscription, and a second to give a "community subscription".
Yep, before we get our first check with a few $ more, food prices rise. Wasn't supposed to be like this. I did become a paid subscriber, once I quit my cigs. 🙄😲⏳⌛
Me too Mary. I emailed you a couple of months ago asking if you could comp me but never heard back. Maybe you are getting more support now and can waive the fee for me. I’m a big fan. Read everything and love seeing you on MSNBC. harrisofschiff@gmail.com
This gives me hope !! Thank you !!! I have stable ms with slight balance impairment so when he made fun of cerebral palsy man it crushed me!! We are all human and deserve a leader that doesn’t make incomprehensible gestures against humanity!!
Mary, don't let one critical note stymie you. Speak your truth, I'm very happy to be a paid subscriber. Your work MUST be financially supported! Thank You for everything you do!
I agree. I wonder if the entitled, insult hurling subscriber has similar feelings about Andy Borowitz and almost all other Substack writers who require a paid subscription to read beyond one paragraph of their articles?
Hmm. I dunno. A single subscriber?, wrote to express their appreciation AND desire for content?, and it gets spun into a donor fest, which is fine except. The non-subscriber faces pitchforks and venom for appealing for access to privileged content, fear of having to pay money to person in position to know that is need-to-know voter tabloid fodder because Donald Trump is such a weirdo, public benefits from insider facts and characterizations.
Consider entrepreneurial money-spinners, passing on cost of a Substack column, is it similar?, to golden running shoes, King James Bible?—consider the public good.
I can understand feeling vulnerable with no money, appealing to gatekeeper with VALUED info available merely because writer lives it, bearing witness. Not exactly a paid informant, but I can understand the non-subscriber’s questions and conundrum.
Don’t turn their fears into a backslapping opportunity. Just do one’s thing and remain proud of unquestioning support. I run the other way from shadow of position questioning those that may question. Hang in there but humility around support means, “You’re welcome, no problem, enjoy.”
Mary, I love your work and look forward to each column you post. Thank you for your insight, and for your bravery in telling the truth about a horrible man you know and had no choice in being related to. Most of us here hugely appreciate what you’re doing, and understand it comes with a cost. Thank you, and keep up the great work.
I appreciate the post, Mary, but, personally, I feel like you don’t owe anyone an explanation. I agree with those who say you can run The Good in Us however you see fit. Thank you for what you do. For all of us.
I’m only sad that the person appealing for access will feel hung-out-to-dry, from all of this.
“Please?” Here condemned.
While fitting is only a polite response, appreciation of appreciation, instead being made an example, told-off both gently and angrily, by people with similar enthusiasm (and means though, for what the correspondent was pleading for).
Wish I could afford subscribing, but go you, Mary! I have the book "To Much and Never Enough"; an excellent read; every so often I re-read it. What I can get on the free The Good In Us will have to do; I am glad that I like chicken and rice.
I'm sure that others have already come to the conclusion that I have just come to. But it has suddenly just dawned on me what Trump's flagrant disregard of the Court's gag order and his smears and clownish antics are really all about.
I now believe that his end game is not merely about taunting and baiting the judge into throwing him into jail so that he could hold himself out as a "political prisoner".
It's more basic than that. And it resembles the political version of the common "Mustard Distraction Scam" practiced by teams of 2 or more pickpockets. One of the group squirts mustard on their victim while the others pick his pockets.
Is Trump squirting us all with mustard to distract us from his hush-money criminal trial and his other crimes?
Last night on The Daily Show, there was a variety of skits parodying Trump's antics in violation of the Court's gag order. They were very funny until, at the end of the show, someone asked, "What case???"
Trump appears to taking a page out of the magician's manual by trying to get us to take our eye off the ball to focus on his antics.
I believe that the extract from the article below on the "Art of Distraction: How Magicians Manipulate Our Minds" could be serving as a blueprint for Trump to distract the electorate' from his "Catch & Kill" hush-money payments to his porn star flame, his attempted coup, his plot to use phony electors, his sexual molestation and defamations and his business frauds. By playing himself to the hilt as the loudmouth blowhard slandering witnesses, judges and even their children and taunting and baiting the judge to throw him in jail, Trump has been struggling to keep the spotlight on him and his vaudeville act and off all the crimes he's committed.
"The key principle employed by magicians is misdirection - guiding attention away from a secret action. It can be as simple as a magician waving one hand to draw attention away from what the other is doing. This exploits what is known as the 'spotlight theory' of attention, which posits that we can only fully concentrate on one thing at a time. When a magician guides our attentional spotlight away from their trick's method, they are free to execute their secret maneuvers without detection....[T]hese principles are closely related to the techniques used in persuasion, advertising, and even political propaganda..."
Hey everybody! Look over here. It's showtime, starring Donald J. Trump!!
Some of it is that; however, most of it had to do with his mental illness. He lacks the capacity for certain limits that the rest of us recognize. It's a powerful combination, and it needs to stop.
Yes, as you say, that contributor’s distraction characterization is all true—but meantime, the slowness of justice has had a maybe unanticipated consequence—given time and opportunity for some MAGA to be deprogrammed, serve prison sentences, learning that, say, getting crushed in, say, 2008–and, though entranced by empty-promises for change from the inside, were lies from a fox in the henhouse.
It’s almost like Trump’s ambition for martyrdom has been USED, in a game of Piggy-in-the-Middle, and by Trump predictably putting himself in front of so many microphones, each time illustrating an aged broken loser. TIME and exposure, not by design, has done the work that proper fast justice would have denied.
I am a paid subscriber and I have no problem if you don't give me special perks. I do it to support you, not to be privy to exclusive content. The future of our country is too important not to help you expose the truth.
I can't imagine sending a swear-filled email or message demanding something for free that Mary has spent hours laboring over every day.
What's the word I'm trying to think of? Oh yeah... "entitled".
"Serious" could be a closet MAGA plant/a spy from the St.Petersburg false information factory. Mary has the right to do what she needs to do in order to save democracy. Case closed!!!
Very likely just intimidation from Maga Cult members. Not to worry. The martyr uncle is working them.
Yes Kate.......Could have been one of the 5 MAGA protesters that showed up outside the courtroom.....LOL LOL
Good One!!! But they probably can't write, either.
Yea...all 5 could have been doing the Orange "Accordian Hands" routine together........since they cannont read.
Ditto! And, yes, entitled!
Another term we are all familiar with - "malignant narcissus."
Mary recently used the term "narcissistic injury." I googled it -- buckle up, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
I don't t understand what " behind a paywall" means, help me out, somebody. I'm an 80-year young subscriber & can't figure that phrase out. 👋🤨💯
Mary, I grew up in Harlem & I love your candid words . So you just keep on informing all of us here bcz MSM sure isn't.
Love it when you show up on MSNBC.
So your brother capitulated, huh?
Keep 🔥💯🎤🌹
Behind a paywall means you need to be a paid subscriber to read/see it. Mary does not put much behind a paywall and the subscription is only $6 per month. She’s so worth supporting if you can afford it.

Hi five from one 80 to another!
Hey I didn't get Paywall either! I had to look it up, and it appears to be a fancy way of referring to subscriptions. Somebody is trying to make a big deal out of nothing, and trying to be important. Oh gawd sorry, had forgotten about that. Yes, thank you!
*Hello 80 years young!* My 68th b-day zeroing in soon.
Some people are just massive jerks, similar to Conald and his horrible children. It looks like his truth will finally be exposed. Let’s all get our popcorn ready🍿
"Conald" I love that!!
Geeze, and at first I thought it was a typo until you stepped in! lol
I just think that the name Conald fits the fat orange rapist better. Don’t you?
People don't understand that writing and art are WORK. They thin it looks fun, so it must just be a hobby. 🙄
To say nothing of the expensive education that Mary got in order to be able to speak with authority on the subject of her uncle's many mental disorders. Thank you, Mary.
Exactly.
as an artist I expect to be paid for my work. Mary is well within her rights to expect payment for her writings. Shoot, I'm happy to support her. Especially after today!
*they think
We all know about the "entitled" now, don't we? lol
Great comment! I know, right? Paywall? That's hilarious, considering what she is asking us to contribute. It's cheaper than most streaming apps! And the Paywall is used so infrequently, bless Miss Trump's heart! The heck with them, we know a good investment.
Well said! I am also a paid subscriber, and I feel exactly the same way you do.
👍👍😀
I too am a paid subscriber and forgot to add that to my comment of a few minutes ago. I am glad I can support your work and provide your family perspective and also professional view as to the seemingly destructive life of Donald Trump
Me too
Well said. I’m a Canadian 🇨🇦 paid subscriber, your neighbour to the North, if you will. I agree 💯. I would like to add that what happens in this election has an effect worldwide. You are absolutely right that what happens here will affect everyone. (I have family in Canada and the UK and I routinely send them news from here, which they don't always see where they are.)
Your wording was absolutely correct. I like to just remind people how much of a roll the US 🇺🇸 plays in the world.
100% correct. And our Americans need to wake up and understand how important this is. Trump needs to fade into the background and world matters need to regain their place in our daily conscience
(role, not roll. Darn autocorrect!)

Don’t be sorry. Donald is at fault.
That's awful. I hope he isn't getting a lot of support.
This is not about anyone but Trump. Stay focused if that's even possible.
Yea sure.......Malcolm Nance talks about the worldwide connections between right wing, upstart extremism. You may want to expand your horizons beyond the shadow pResident Trump.
Malcolm Nance has that covered , so continue to read him.
Mary's agenda, from the beginning, is to keep us informed about the dangers her father's brother poses to our country and the world .
You got a problem with that? WE DON'T.
I don't think he actually wanted or needed Alex Jones' endorsement. Calling him Canada's Trump is stupid- something the Liberals are doing because they see that they are down in the polls and just hope people don't take the time to ascertain just what is true.
Trump North did NOT turn down Alex Jones. He is walking the fine line, leading in the polls.
Using the subliminal talking points that right wing think tanks like the Fraiser Institute/Heritage Foundation feed into soiciety.
WJB Motown, your remarks reflect the quintessential example of why it's impossible to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.
Perhaps you're referring to the Fraser Institute; all their publications are peer-reviewed before being released to "soiciety". 😆
You are right. Doing battle with someone who is unimformed is a lost cause.
🤣🤣🤣
Mary is one of the few sources here who actually reports facts.
And please know, all Americans are NOT CRAZY, or do we endorse this person who actually stole the election from her. If only she had won...what a different world this would be for all of us....
Ditto!
👍👍😀
Ditto
Me too.
Your words are exactly what I say, Paula B. !
Exactly my sentiment.
Same here!!!!!
Folks, 🌹; We need a group name......
You are allowed to run your Substack any way you like.
Amen!!!!
Mary! You are such a wonderful , insightful, compassionate patriot! Keep on keeping on ! Your Dad would be very proud of you !💙😊
We are having a tough time living on Social Security. But we appreciate you so much. Wish we could send you some money.
Same.
Yes, I wish Substack offered a Donate widget. That would be so helpful.
So the community subscription is one where we can give a little extra when we can? It's not another subscription? If so that great news!
Harris, I am buying you a subscription right now. You should hear from Mary's team via your email
Me too social security is not quite enough, is it?
This gives me hope !! Thank you !!! I have stable ms with slight balance impairment so when he made fun of cerebral palsy man it crushed me!! We are all human and deserve a leader that doesn’t make incomprehensible gestures against humanity!!
He made fun of John McCain for being a POW, said he was a loser for getting caught. Geesh. donald trump is a big fat LOSER!!!!!
That from a guy who never served!
I served. Trump is a loser and serial criminal!
I agree if you meant Trump who never served and not Jean A!
I’m right there with you.
That was shameful and disgusting.
After I saw what you were writing, I became a paying subscriber. You do an outstanding job... keep the heat turned on high. We need you!
Mary's work must be making her Uncle nervous. Bet the complainer was one of his maggots.
Hmm. I dunno. A single subscriber?, wrote to express their appreciation AND desire for content?, and it gets spun into a donor fest, which is fine except. You lost me in the first paragraph.
My husband and I both subscribe. You are the highlight of our day! Thanks Mary!
Keep doing what you’re doing. Invaluable insights
I appreciate the post, Mary, but, personally, I feel like you don’t owe anyone an explanation. I agree with those who say you can run The Good in Us however you see fit. Thank you for what you do. For all of us.
No one works for free. We all appreciate you! Do not let a random person try to guilt you into being everything for everybody without returning value.

I really appreciate your writing here. The power of family dysfunction is mind boggling.
I am more than happy to subscribe - you are providing a service to all of us! Hang in there.

We still deserve to see justice. You are right, but that is not enough. He has been harming people, including his own family members, for decades.
*most of it has
As a happy paying subscriber, Mary, I value your insightful columns.
Thank you. 💙
