I’m trying to remain patient with the pace—even though it does appear to be accelerating—of the investigation into the many crimes committed by so many members of the Trump administration. I know these things take time. It is undoubtedly the largest and most complex investigation in DoJ history. Legal time runs much more slowly than political time—or any other kind of time. If you go for the king you best not miss. Yeah, I get it. The impatience comes from the fact that we, the people, know they all did it.
I’m also following a lot of threads for this coming week including the continuing, horrific fallout from the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood which includes the complete collapse of the Court’s legitimacy; the shocking (but not surprising) cover-up of the January 6th crimes that has spread to the Department of Homeland Security; and the news that a group of Republicans and pseudo-Democrats, led by the execrable Andrew Yang, is starting a third party call “Forward.” I assume that’s short for “Forward toward Destruction.”
And here’s a video you might enjoy about the Right’s masculinity crisis, Alan Dershowitz's Greek tragedy, and Senate Republicans proving themselves, yet again, to be monsters.
I appreciate your video pieces. Your voice is an important brick against the rising authoritarianism in this country. What you have done and are doing can't be easy. You have my gratitude and that of millions more. Stay the course, and thank you.
the men who are bravely running against the authoritarians, men like Beto, Fetterman, Ryan, et al, are the models of masculinity that we (or at least I) need.
I hear you, Mary, and I often feel the same way. I remind myself that mistrials won't help us. I think Merrick Garland understands this better than anyone and realizes he must have his case perfectly stitched together. I think when he finally shows his cards, he's going to surprise a lot of people, and some, not pleasantly. He's taken a lot of criticism and yet remains unruffled. I like that because to me, it shows that Garland is a man of absolute integrity and rule of law, and I just get a feeling that history will regard him as a hero. On a very personal note, I hope Mitch McConnell is soiling himself now for blocking Garland's appointment to the Supreme Court in the last year of Obama's term. As they say, vengeance is a dish best served cold.
Mary, your commentary is invaluable to us that have waited and waited and wait some more for that fiasco of a cousin of yours to finally get his comeuppance. I just dream of the day when it happens and we can all Rest In Peace. Thank you for being the beacon of light in this otherwise dark and dreary world!
Donald Jr (talking - well, shouting - today about a third-world country without noting it didn't turn into one till his father got hold of it) and Ivanka (walked out of the White House with $640 million *that we know of* ) are her cousins
They were almost indicted for a real estate scam in NYC until Donald Sr made a "campaign contribution" to the DA in charge of the indictment
Thanks for another lovely sunset pic! You are more justified than most in your impatience with the DOJ investigation. Looking forward to your take on the latest craziness. Wishing you and everyone else a peaceful evening.
Great column. Andrew Yang needs to sit down, shut up, and get out of the way. I'll watch your video later. Right now I have a date with season 2 of Picard. Jean-Luc,Picard, now there's a masculine man. ;)
"a scientific and philosophical rule that entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily which is interpreted as requiring that the simplest of competing theories be preferred to the more complex or that explanations of unknown phenomena be sought first in terms of known quantities"
Or more simply, when multiple hypotheses compete, the simplest tends to be the correct one. It's a form of KISS! (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) :) Occam's Razor is great to use when considering claims being made. To me, it's the starting point in critical thinking.
I share your impatience with the pace of Garland's investigation, Mary. Even with the recent news DOJ is investigating THAT MAN's criminal activities, I find myself thinking, faster, faster. A friend pointed out an arrest that doesn't end in conviction would be the worst thing possible. Which doesn't stop me from fantasizing about watching his perp walk before summer ends. As you said, we KNOW they're all guilty of a multitude of crimes. I admit the court probably has a higher standard for evidence to convict than we do, however. Bummer.
As for the shenanigans at DHS, I was waiting for that shoe to drop, since Cousin Donald seemed to consider Homeland Security and Border Control and Secret Service agents his personal militia. Now it appears that's what some of them were.
And imho, whether he is in his Jean Luc Picard persona or in his own, I find Sir Patrick Stewart the essence of masculinity because he seems to be a dependable, responsible man who has a sense of humor and intelligence. None of those traits appear to exist in #45.
Lastly, I'm a newbie, and if I've written too long, please tell me. I am thrilled to be here with all of you, and I'm grateful to Mary for her insights and for providing this circle of like-minded folks.
MARY'S cousin, not mine, thank the goddess! I was being facetious -- or attempting it -- because calling people Cousin whatever is a southern stereotype. I try to limit my use of it to much-loved first cousins.
When MaryTrump is referring to the donald, she's talking about her uncle, who has been an explicit criminal potus in your whitehouse.
Maybe I have been misunderstanding her, these last few years, and that she means her cousins. Though I can't imagine, who those could be. Apart from the three moron spawns of the donald and ivana.
Anyway, regards from London 😷 🌈 have a happy day, every day. 🌞
So, you haven't posted on the substack in a few weeks, and I have no idea whether you read comments. But a question. With the news of the Mar-a-Lago search, the Espionage Act, etc, and the dawning realization of the whole pile of shit he's facing and that he may actually be held responsible for his actions, a) is he even capable of realizing the situation he's gotten himself into? and b) given his psychological profile, which you understand as well as anyone, and given that he's fundamentally a coward, would he ever consider suicide as an exit option to what he's going to be facing?
[edit: I'm obviously not saying that anyone who commits suicide is a coward, but I'd say some are, e.g. Jeffrey Epstein, a rich entitled man who couldn't face the consequences of his actions, unless the conspiracy theories are true and someone whacked him...]
Asking around...please send me to someone who knows...
You may think this is off topic, but the USA doesn't live in a vacuum an I hope you will address this concern in relation to the lack of
direct participation of the USA in Putins war/Ukrainian genocide/attempt to make Empire of the European Union, which he plans to do by 2050. At least that was his plan untill the Ukrainians objected ..

Also plug in climate change, which could see St Petersburg with about 20% of the total population flooded in the not too distant future (scientists constantly in a dither about predicting anything).
Just found an excellent podcast series that you and everyone should check out. Done by Jeremy Scahill for The Intercept: American Mythology - The Presidency of Donald Trump.
Hope and patience is so important. Also, this is a moment for America to realize just how much relies on people doing the right thing. The gaps or vague areas of law in these investigations makes it doubly important to get the evidence, the strategy, and the legal arguments right. One of my law professors was found of saying, “don’t make bad law” meaning you don’t go to a court with a poor case and have to deal with losing and the precedence that will set. It’s hard, just as you said. Thanks for writing this piece!
Mary, a little off this immmediate subject, but pertaining to the bigger one of putting your Uncle out of comission...have you read Tom Hartmanns article "Republicans have a plan to change the Constitution and it may just workl! " dated August 2? This is a must read in order to be ahead of them, so you should read it. This is one of the reasons your Uncle was put in place, and the reason they want him back in office. The GOP has a much easier time doing their damage when DJT is President because he distracts everybody while they do the damage they are intent on doing. Here is the link to the article.... https://hartmannreport.com/p/republicans-have-a-plan-to-change?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share I would love to hear your opinion on this and particularly how you think it relates to having DJT back in office!
New here! Brilliant video 😂 So glad I found your substack community. I read your book about Donald a while back after you were on the Rachel Maddow Show and laughed/sighed all the way through.
Mary must have had a good laugh when she heard that "Donald" was the ideal masculinity measure. Hopefully soon we will hear how masculine he is behind bars.
Last year I moved out of NYC after 37 years so am always trying to place not-really-obvious shots. This one looks like it could have been taken from an upper level not far from the former Trump Soho? Is there an ulterior motive here? Either way, thanks for the memory of serene Hudson sunsets and your current incisive insights. Highly recommend the kayaking over at Pier 26 on a hot evening if you haven't checked it out already..
The old Cole Porter song says: Birds do it, bees do it... These creatures don't discuss how they are going to provide for their young ones because they don't have to commute to work, pay bills, etc. to survive in a MAN-made world. The pill came along in the 60s so women (and men) around the world could have a smidgen of control over natural healthy impulses. I remember people warning that if the U.S. allowed muslims in, sharia law would soon be in place, and now?

Ahem, excuse me...i think you mean uncle , not cousin...
🙏 from London 😷 🌈
Maybe she meant both? lol...Why not?
Donald Jr (talking - well, shouting - today about a third-world country without noting it didn't turn into one till his father got hold of it) and Ivanka (walked out of the White House with $640 million *that we know of* ) are her cousins

So the analogy still holds, I think

Mary!
You!
Nailed!
It!!!!!!!!
Donald is giving out answers for those that can tolerate listening to him.
His remark about 9/11 and the results of the investigations seem like a warning to the GOP cronies.
Just what info does DJT have on 9/11 that is turning full grown men into yellow bellied cowards??
Thank you, Mary, for the beautiful sunset picture and column. I watched your good video earlier.
Have a beautiful night, too!
Mary is making me smarter with her title: "Occam's razor".
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Occam%27s%20razor defines it as:
"a scientific and philosophical rule that entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily which is interpreted as requiring that the simplest of competing theories be preferred to the more complex or that explanations of unknown phenomena be sought first in terms of known quantities"
Or more simply, when multiple hypotheses compete, the simplest tends to be the correct one. It's a form of KISS! (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) :) Occam's Razor is great to use when considering claims being made. To me, it's the starting point in critical thinking.

I say! What's with the "cousin" bit!?
Enlighten me!

Kinda hard to have a beautiful night when you’ve basically provided an itemized receipt of our ongoing demise 😂
How come Trump has not been indicted yet?
i know we need to be patient with the pace of justice but yes, still seems to be dragging on
There is some comfort in knowing that “... we, the people, know they all did it.” enabling... requiring us to see beyond the individual. We must.

Well didn't we have a joyful time with this broadcast..Keep them coming
Thank you once again Mary, for your voice of clarity, honesty and sometimes humor. Love your video too.
I have twenty podcasts to listen to. You are the most interesting and fun.
God bless Donald Trump.
