Just how much donor money is Donald spending on legal fees?

Per the AP,

“Trump’s Save America PAC has paid nearly $37 million to more than 60 law firms and individual attorneys since January 2022, Federal Election Commission records show.”

“That amounts to more than half of the PAC’s total expenditures…”

In other words, Donald is ostensibly fundraising for his “campaign”, while in reality, more than HALF of the money is going to lawyers. Let’s break it down further.

“The bulk of the Trump PAC money went to law firms that have defended Trump against a series of criminal charges or in civil lawsuits,” the AP continues. “Other attorneys paid with the contributions worked on behalf of Trump’s businesses, his children, former White House aides and employees of the ex-president.”

Yes, you read that right. Save America PAC is not only paying for Donald’s legal fees, it’s picking up the tab for Donald’s accomplices (also known as sycophants and enablers).

Donald isn’t exactly known for being charitable.

Why would Donald pay for witnesses’ legal fees?

It’s simple, according to Randall Eliason, a former federal prosecutor and criminal law professor at George Washington University Law School.

“The way these cases get built is you persuade the little fish to testify against the big fish,” Eliason told the AP. “Well, if the little fish’s lawyer is being paid by the big fish that’s less likely to happen potentially.”

“Footing the legal bills for co-defendants and potential witnesses raises additional thorny ethical questions: Will the attorneys paid by Trump be more loyal to him or their clients? If clients feel indebted to Trump, will they be less forthcoming about what they know?” the AP asks.

How we can stop it

Some campaign finance experts argue that Donald’s use of campaign money for lawyers in cases unrelated to the campaign or to officeholder duties clearly is in conflict with a federal ban that forbids personal use of campaign donations.

In other words, Donald’s use of donor funds should be illegal. And soon, it might be.

The obstacle is the FEC. Right now, for frustrating reasons I’ll get to, the FEC ruled the prohibition does not apply to so-called leadership PACs.

Currently, the FEC commission is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. Donald nominated the the Republicans. A Democratic commissioner appointed by Biden “joined with the Republicans to declare in March the personal use ban didn’t apply to leadership PACs,” according to the AP.

Just ONE vote allows Donald to get away with this. Infuriating.

But the issue is far from settled. Donald could eventually find himself the subject of an FEC or DOJ personal use case – if it’s found the funds were improperly used.

We need to beat this drum all day long and demand the FEC determine that Donald’s paying legal bills with donor money should not be allowed.

Write your representative, and tell them you agree with Campaign Legal Center which states, “With the FEC formally abdicating its regulatory responsibility, Congress must act swiftly to stop leadership PAC abuse and remedy the rampant corruption that has gone unchecked for far too long.”

If Donald loses the ability to rely on his rubes to fund his legal bills, his political ambitions would be ruined.
