My friend Ralphie was the grandson of one of the founders of Nordstrom, which got its start in Seattle, where we lived at the time. Ralphie's mother--daughter of the Nordstrom founder--was interior decorator to the hoi polloi of Seattle, including future Nixon aide John Erlichman. My parents were both trained economists, and both left wing Democrats. (My mother's uncle had been head of the Colorado Democratic Party for years.)
Ralphie and I were in the car, with Mom at the wheel. Remembering about Nixon's having smeared Helen Gahagan Douglas when they ran for the Senate, an incident I'd heard about but barely understood, except that I knew it reflected poorly on Nixon, I said to Ralphie:
"You know Ralphie, you really shouldn't vote for Nixon because he called that lady in California something like an economist."
I'm virtually certain I'm quoting myself accurately, because my mother, who didn't do a lot of laughing, found this story incredibly funny, and told it often.
