I think Mark Milley did a great job of explaining his actions on 60 Minutes last night. He reiterated that he new the march with Donnie was a mistake, and was truly sorry. I can respect him for his response when asked what he thought of comments that have been made about him lately. Definitely the bigger man, and someone (djt) hates that!! Have a Great day!

I, too, want to thank you for your kind words about Israel.

Mary, thank you for your concern about Israel. We just completed our last major holiday for the year this evening and I just received word that someone I went to high school with, his son has been kidnapped. My newphew and many of my friends children have been called up to the reserves, some are on a flight back to Israel from Chicago now. Security has been increased for all Jewish community centers around the world and the pain is palpable in all of us. But sadly we have been here before and since anti-semitism is a useful tool for governments it will never ever go away.

Thank you so much. Our family and friends are on the front lines scared but running to help everyone everywhere day and night. Friends of mine just travelled to Israel from Chicago to volunteer at an army base in Eilat. My friend “N” her son “C” has been sent to a special army unit to handle burying the dead. But our hearts are so heavy for High School classmates whose son Hersh Goldberg-Polin was kidnapped at the music festival. Hamas blew his arm off with a grenade but he was a medic in the army and knew how to tie his own tourniquet. They have been interviewed on CNN and other channels and their family lives close by my home.

All of this pain for nothing.

This is not new for us. 2000 years of this hell around the word because we refused to convert to Christianity and Islam. We know the world is better and brighter and more joyous with diversity. No one ever said I wish the world only had one kind of flower one ocean one type of tree. It’s all so silly. Dr Maya Angelou once said “When we know better we do better.” When oh when will that be true, and when will we lay down our swords and turn them into gardening tools? I hope I dream everyday.

I totally agree with you, deeply.

I dream a world. If only.

This is what happens when a government is allowed to lie to its citizens. Thank you for your kind reply.

Donald would have used the tragedy in Israel as an opportunity to talk about himself.

He's done that since then, actually and unfortunately

Thanks, Mary! I agree with you that these are the most active, concerned, engaged and thoughtful folks! I am new here, and have been amazed at the kindness and interaction of this group. Your leadership and love have attracted likeminded subscribers.

I agree with Mary the commenters on these posts are amazing. A very good group of caring, thoughtful people.

On a personal note, the first record I bought was an Elvis Presley 78 -- "Love me Tender" with "Don't be Cruel" on the flip side (if memory serves me correctly.) And yes, I am really that old.

It broke my heart when my mother's cat we had taken in managed to break every single 78 in my basement - they had belonged to my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and I had wanted to slowly listen to them once I finally had a player. I have about ten of them left and treat them like gold. But just in case - many of these gems are on Archive.org. Treasure them always, because they are a gift previous generations never had - the voices of those that are gone.

We have a close friend of my husbands, and several former co-workers in Israel. We got through to one via text yesterday, and he and his family are fine for now. He told him "now I know how you felt after 9/11". When that was repeated back to me, it knocked the air out of me. The more we struggle to leave our kids a better place, the less it is. And in light of someone's need to hoard and pass on classified information to anyone who wanted to hear it, I hope nothing he did or told was part of this. I have to believe in karma, or I will cry again.

How does a cat manage to break a 78?

THey were in a box in the basement, on top of other boxes and he knocked them on to the cement floor. They shattered into a box of shards. 78's are not plastic. Many of the really old ones were glass or shellac. A few survived that were in an album, but that was like 5 out of over 100.

My family of origin had them (I was born in '53), and I remember handling them probably late in that decade and early in the next. I think I faintly remember that they were heavier than one would expect plastic to be, but my contact with them was minimal. Thanks for this info.

We can also use orange man as a dart board face, throw darts at his face. Also, put him the garden as a scare crow to scare birds away from the corn you plant. He is just plain ugly.

In 1959 my family spent the summer with friends at Seneca Lake in Ohio. The husband had just received the Broadway soundtrack from ‘The Music Man.’ For some reason it was on 78s. I had never seen them before; I was fascinated! We listened to it all summer. It became our family musical!

I would like to offer an addition to "The Good in Us" with further analysis of human behavior which includes the "Bad" in many of us. I do this without the interference of the idea of responsibility and fault finding. Every person on this planet has a value system which governs their thoughts, behavior and their relations with others. We are very much like other social animals that are caught between a "rock and a hard place". If we are too good to each other, we will lose the quality of life that is desirable for ourselves and our families. If we are too bad to each other, we are forced to be defensive against everything that scarcity, the threat of scarcity and competition can produce. Human beings are social animals not competitive ones. Cooperation is the dominant value in social behavior. Trying to win produces not only competition but also resentments, prejudices, bigotries, envy, scorn, anger and eventually conflict. Ignorance of this eventually leads to its closest cousin Stupidity, which can be defined as support for ignorance. Our world is filled with the stupidity of the present-day values of ignorance and stupidity and is expressed in mental disorders, conflicts of all kinds including war, poverty, and the horror story of the possibility of global disaster. There is Good in us but the Bad is also very evident and very dangerous. The only solution for reversing this trend is a dependence on education, science and the sociology of positive social change. It is possible!

Unfortunately, saying Democrat as an adjective has been repeated so often that even many non-trolls -- and some are Democratic friends of mine -- use it that way. I correct them when I can.

You're not the only one, Nancy

It points to the important of being careful about language as well as how easy it is to slip ... and then we "come to" and then all of a sudden the Overton Window has moved even further to the fascist right -- and we're asking along with the Talking Heads

"How did we get here?"

This is off topic so apologies there. With everything going on, the nonstop 💩 shows whether legitimate, performative, or Narcissistic, "hey, don't forget me", it struck me your choice of name for your essays is so perfect. It's peaceful, warm, a mothers hug, reassuring. Just repeating it silently to myself lowers the temperature, it's calming. Thank you Mary! Even though I don't know you it's clear ,you are such a good person!
