Mary, we agreed to the border plan weeks ago. That Tom Homan (aka border troll) even gave this blessing. Meanwhile, Trump has ruined the relationship between our two countries. The tariffs may be off for now, but we are still planning, and many Canadians, including this one, aren’t buying anything from the States because he’s trying to break us. No other way to see it. Trump could care less about the one per cent of fentanyl coming over our border. What about the guns coming from the States into Canada? He wants to annex Canada. What Trump and the people who support him have done to us feels like a betrayal. That's exactly how it feels. Betrayal. We have been there for the States during good times and bad. Through wars, disasters helping each other. That's likely going to end.

It is a betrayal, and it's a betrayal of American citizens too. We don't want this any more than you do. He needs to shut his big mouth.

Spot On...!

I don’t blame you for not buying from the U.S. If I were Canadian, I wouldn’t either. Many people in the U.S. are avoiding buying from companies that contributed money to MAGA scumbags, and I love how Trudeau aimed potential tariffs against red states.

PS. I’m going to make an effort to buy Canadian now.

Thanks. Trump has put us all in a terrible mess. We have to find a way to stand up to him.

Tara, if you have suggestions for Canadian products we can buy, please let us know.

I will check and see what else there is beyond maple syrup. 😁 There are similar products on both sides of the border but some are made here (eg cereals etc) and in the States. I will get back to you!

What's a good Canadian dark beer? I'm switching.

I like the odd half of Newcastle Brown Ale myself. That's English, though. 😁 Lots of microbreweries with all kinds/styles of beer all across Canada. Alexander Keiths (not dark, but excellent all-round beer), Sleeman Honey Brown, Big Rock Traditional. And from Fort Garry Brewing Company (I’m in Winnipeg) is their Dark. And from Quebec is Maudite Ale by Unibroue. Hope that helps!

I wonder, Can one impeach Elon Musk if only to reemphasize that he is not elected and thus has unconstitutional power without accountability.

Expand full comment

Certainly Trump should be impeached, but precisely who is going to impeach him? It would take Republicans, and they are total cowards.

But Musk does not hold ANY POSITION IN GOVERNMENT. Impeach him from what?

What SHOULD happen to Musk is he should be arrested because everything he is doing is illegal.

Expand full comment

Exactly. My point is that Musk - who has not only not been elected but never ran - should be challenged. Impeach, the “case” is brought to court, his unconstitutional powers are revealed. Clumsy, I know … but something.

And “something” seems better than wringing one’s hands. Please come up with something better.

Expand full comment

No one in power seems to care. Many are of us live from paycheck to paycheck and we’d love to strike back. Musk wasn’t elected or vetted by Congress and has no business hacking into government computer systems.

That’s right — this sure ain’t normal. But when was the last time anything WAS normal in the last 10 years? If Mitch McConnell had done his fucking job four years ago and ensured a conviction in Trump’s second impeachment trial we would not be dealing with ANY of this fucking bullshit. We don’t have to wait for “history” to look back on that abysmal moment to realize — TODAY — that that was one of those pivotal moments that allowed Trump to ultimately make his way back to the WH and initiate the authoritarian regime he’s been talking about FOR YEARS — similar to all the seemingly small inconsequential but incremental moments in 1930s Germany when spinelessness allowed Hitler’s rise to power. THIS WAS NOT INEVITABLE but now WE. ARE. FUCKED. Thanks Mitch you miserable POS.

As a proud Canadian, we as a nation have seen not diplomacy but bullying by De Dump. He reminds me of the fable about the sky falling. Eventually, no, you will listen to his threats, and the likelihood of four years of this will not happen. The United States on the world stage is a laughing embarrassment. Also, how can Pin Head, the guy who likes to dance on a stage and will see his car empire crumble as competition forces him to close plant after plant, get to act in your country with no legal or being voted to a position? He was not elected. Can we say that the enemy is not from outside the United States but very active within?

So this is what $280 million donated to Donald's campaign fund will buy for an illegal alien-limitless administrative power to tie up the government's finances and cut out its most worthy programs. A cabal of autocrats is seizing the show, and it is up to the People to boot them. Stoic members of Congress like AOC, Jamie Raskin, and Jasmine Crockett set an example to drive back this impending coup while we still can. Resist!

Tara, personally, I’m distraught how our closest neighbors and allies are being treated. It’s frightening and painful to watch-helplessly. No majority voted him in. He stole the election, plain and simple. Of course, it’s disgusting that he had any real support at all, but he absolutely didn’t have enough to win legitimately.

There’s a ginormous difference between the crazy MAGAts who accused us of cheating in 2020 and those of us who accuse dump of cheating now: dump’s extensive history of criminal behavior, including 2 prior attempts at election theft, one of which was successful.

If we don’t face this reality, how are we going to protect future elections from hacking?

Technically, a plurality, not a majority. Which means more voted against him than for him. Unfortunately, if the numbers were reversed, the same thing would have been true for Harris/Walz.

I think we should have a requirement of a majority vote in each state -- either through a runoff election in states where there's a plurality rather than a majority or through a ranked-choice ballot in each state -- in order to win a state's electoral votes.

Better yet, get the required number of states to join the National Popular Vote interstate compact <https://www.nationalpopularvote.com/>.

At this time, after 2/03 Rachel news, midway through Lawrence I'm down but excited about the recent protests and the USAID protests I believe included many employees of USAID and senators that I know of. Sitting in my apt, watching, listening to the wrecking ball of trump and mindless 'yes men' smash into the foundation of America seems like a huge rogue ocean wave not quote yet breaking. But a Mary Trump movement brings us together where runaway emotions are lassoed and with her way of speaking to her followers the runaway emotions are (mine anyway) morphed into a place where follow-up ideas might be realized. Hope! Who'd-a-thunk-it!?

Simple, she and her brother were raised by their mother. Fred Jr. didn’t want to be in the family business and it angered Fred Sr. Donald stepped in to become the favored son. Mary is a psychologist and her paternal family was extremely dysfunctional. Her first book shows the weird family dynamics.

Why Musk hates USAID? How about its role in ending apartheid in his homeland. Plus as a favor to his buddy Putin.

Expand full comment

Trump has no capacity or intention to fulfill his campaign promise to bring down the prices of goods and services that Americans need to live their everyday lives - so instead, he is manufacturing one crisis after another to create a smokescreen of chaos and lawlessness to distract attention away from what he promised, that resulted in nearly half the country voted for him.

Expand full comment

Actually, slightly more than one third of eligible voters neglected to vote at all. Roughly a third voted for the First Felon, another third for Harris/Walz, with a mere 1.5% difference between the two. The numbers still smell fishy to me, but in any event, NOT a mandate, NOT a landslide.

For all our bragging about being thr world’s most influential republic, our voter participation rate is horrible. We have never recognized the right of all citizens to vote for the candidate of heir choice. The SCOTUS majority is allowing the GQP to engage in gerrymandering, voter suppression based on racial and ethnic discrimination, voter caging, and a whole host of other practices that should have been outlawed years ago. We should establish a system which gives all citizens a meaningful right to vote. We also need to start teaching civics/American government in public schools again instead of allowing the wingnuts to miseducate the American public.
