These days optimism seems like a high bar. Just when you think things may get better, a bunch of republicans and other narcissists remind us not to get our hopes up.

Optimism is hard these days but we always have to have hope.

Oh, SO TRUE!

Second that emotion!

I just want to say thank you Mary Trump for absolutely killing it every time I read your newsletter. You put into words every single thought I have, every day. You now top my list for “someone I would love to have a beer with”

Wow--thanks! Just make sure it's a Bass. 🙂

I love that phrase "grown-ass children"!

Expand full comment

Yeah, well, they are--and they're complicit. After what the Republicans did to Chelsea Clinton--an actual child at the time--I have no patience for their hypocrisy. (Plus what they continue to do to Pres. Biden's adult child, Hunter.)

And if they are "children" why were they working

in the White House?

Expand full comment

Agree! Grown-ass “children” indeed!

Oh Mary Trump, you are a ray of reason and a tide of comfort.....thanks.

Wow--thank you, Laura.

Mary this so reminds me of the early 70’s when I was glued to the tv during Watergate hearings at the age of 22. Started as a trickle but ended as a tsunami of justice. Now almost 50 years later I sincerely hope it’s the same momentum. Everything crossed including my eyes!

I am right there with you.

I was around at that time, too. I couldn't understand how the grown-ups in my country could be so blind as to not see Nixon for the liar he was. I think younger people can see more clearly when someone lies v. tells the truth.

And your Cap is absolutely adorbs. I have 4 cats, 2 of which are tuxedo gents, one a ginger & other a gray striped with a boxer’s face but the loviest one of all.

Cats are the best. Cap brings me joy. (Linden, Sebastian, and Nemo, too.)

My twin tuxedo cats are named Julian and Joaquin. They are Democats and Cathlicks like the Castro brothers. When l say "GOP" they puke up hairballs.

I do feel very optimistic that there will be some legal accountability for at least some of the more nefarious players you mentioned. I also believe the DOJ is undertaking a massive investigation and hope that will yield results. It will be interesting to see what impact all of that will have. Thanks for bringing the snark tonight, perfect way to end a Monday! GAY!!!!

I agree, Ronda. GAY!!!

Happy to say that, in my 20 years in NC, I've never heard Confederate Memorial Day (May 10 per wikipedia) mentioned much less observed or celebrated publicly although I'm sure there are private events.

Last summer, my daughter and I went to a Fayetteville law office to close the sale on our property and, holy shit!, the place was full of historic Confederate documents and portraits. I mean "official" stuff and, while my kid is frantically taking pics, I'm trying to rush her out to not get caught! The place was creepy, old, very starched and it oozed Blood Red.

And I had a phone conversation with a woman named "Gay" recently, who was just that, a very gay person who, as I told her, was obviously named such back when the word simply meant happy!

So, I propose we literally just start telling people to...

Have a GAY DAY!

The American South really worries me.

As for telling people to have a GAY DAY, I totally concur.

Oh, wow! I'm a 60-year political junkie (since 7th grade), so I know what I'm talking about when I say, "Brilliant summary, Mary!" I'm blown away!

Have I told you lately that I love you? Your observations, information, and commentary are a lifeline, illuminating the cognitive blindspots we have been inhabiting at our peril. Russel Brand once said, "Fear is the midwife of compliance." Thank you for your courageous voice in the face of so much pathologized cacophony. We need to expose the proto-Gingriches among us and take their smirking disregard for the truth seriously. Much gratitude for creating a space where we can all be proud Americans, no hyphens needed.

Expand full comment

Thanks, Shabnam. No hyphens, indeed!

Expand full comment

Excuse my French but fuck hyphens. We are all Americans regardless the shade of our skin. Someone on Twitter asked whether we should refer to Hispanic folks as Latinix.

I responded I just call them Americans. Obvi white privilege player. 🖕🏻

Thank you, Mary, for the facts. I liked the picture of Cap. Is there a picture of Linden's "Eyes wide open"?

I will post a picture of Linden soon.

Momentum, I don't feel it. I would like to be optimistic but I can't.. so much power grabbing bullshit on the republican side gives me little hope...

It's tough but there are a lot of good people out there fighting the good fight. We've got to hang in there so we win in November. That's the most important thing right now.

I wake up every day hoping there is a BIG bright light at the end of this dark tunnel we have endured since DT opened the doors to his alternate universe! Watergate was mind blowing but this is beyond comprehension. How can so many people be so ignorant to listen to the lies spewed by him and the GOP! Where is the humanity?

Expand full comment

It's tough to take but we need to keep in mind that most of them are making the decisions they make because they're being lied to--and kept purposely ignorant.

Expand full comment

I’m just constantly amazed that so many people are so easily taken in! Makes me so sad😢

Expand full comment

Maybe the bad aliens are seeding the minds of weak, ignorant people?? I mean, how else to explain such mass stupidity?

Expand full comment

Robert E. Lee Day, and Confederate Memorial Day.

Still being commemorated in places in the United States.

How astonishing, and how sad.

Anytime someone tries to whitewash the past and extol the professional virtues of a General Nathan Bedford Forrest, or an Obersturmbannführer Joachim Peiper, I know there is a hidden agenda.

And that agenda includes at the very least an attempted minimizing of the criminality and the trauma which was caused by that person.

Dr. Mary L. Trump, you are writing and engaging about issues that will be looked back upon in history as the most important in our time.

Thank you!

I agree, William.

And thank you for your kind words.
