In the midst of last week’s unbroken stream of breaking news—some unexpected (the Supreme Court ruling about Alabama’s racist gerrymandering), some potentially earth-shattering (the indictments)—I had a welcome respite in the form of a conversation with my good friend Joyce Vance.
Joyce has a regular series, “Five Questions with . . .” on her excellent Substack, Civil Discourse. (Past participants include George Takei, Eric Holder, and Marc Elias.) Joyce gave me an opportunity to talk about things outside the usual realm of what I’m expected to talk about, which was a real pleasure.
I’ve known Joyce since the Spring of 2021 when, out of the blue, she sent me a DM on Twitter inviting me to join a Zoom knitting group. I admired Joyce’s work long before that DM, so I jumped at the chance, despite the fact that my knitting skills are not particularly impressive. Everybody in the group hit it off, and the friendships that have come out of it are among the best things to come out of my life after the publication of my first book.
