Donald loses not one, not two, but THREE defense attorneys in two major cases, just two months before one could head to trial. I have an idea why. Read on.š
On what everyone knew was supposed to be a day of victory for Donald in Iowa, this loss will still be burning in his mind: Donaldās defense team was rocked by news today that attorney Joseph Tacopina is dropping Donald as a client ā not only for his Manhattan criminal case, but also for the appeal of E. Jean Carrollās first verdict against him.
Tacopina, one of Donaldās key advocates, appeared by his side during his New York criminal arraignment after being charged by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg. But, now, Tacopina will become somebody Donald will pretend not to know.
Itās not unusual for Donald to go through lawyers at an alarming rate, but Tacopinaās high profile status shows just how dysfunctional Donaldās ādefenseā really is.
Why Tacopina Jumped Ship
According to the New York Times, āit was not clear why Mr. Tacopina decided to withdraw, and he declined to comment.ā
But I know thereās more to the story.
Last year, somebody close to Donald leaked to Rolling Stone that there was friction between Tacopina and the rest of Donaldās legal team. In fact, āa number of Trumpās other current lawyers have privately described Tacopina as ādumbā and a āloudmouth.āā
In this case, we have to consider the source.
Two other sources close to Donald also said that Trumpās lawyers and advisors warned him to ābe careful with Tacopinaā and that Donald shouldnāt ātrust the attorneyās loyalty.ā
But hereās what many have missed:
Donald recently told The New York Times he wanted to testify in E. Jean Carrollās new trial ā but there was something likely holding him back: his lawyer Joseph Tacopina. Tacopina advised Donald not to testify in the first trial ā a decision Donald reportedly regretted since he was on the losing side of the verdict.
After Donaldās disastrous closing argument in his New York fraud trial, itās no wonder that Tacopina wanted to distance himself from Donaldās penchant for self-destruction behavior.
Another potential reason for Tacopinaās withdrawal is that Donald might not have paid his bills. According to former prosecutor Michael McAuliffe, lack of payment can be a basis for withdraw. And, as we know, this has been a pattern with Donald over the course of the last several decades. I will, of course, update you when a reason is made public.
How it got worse
Losing just one key lawyer could have a devastating impact on a case, but not only is Tacopina dumping Donald as a client ā his entire firm is leaving. That means Donald is losing two other lawyersā¦ all in the same day.
There are a few reasons why the loss of counsel is a major set back for any defense. Typically, legal counsel develops a theory of the case in order to help guide preparation. This close to trial, lawyers will have spent hundreds, perhaps thousands of hours compiling evidence and gaining an understanding of the nuances of the case.
New lawyers might not have to start from scratch, but catching up would be a difficult task.
Donald may have scored a win with his cult in the Iowa caucus today, but in terms of the stakes of him remaining a free man, his loss of counsel may be much more relevant going forward.
And that is just too too bad.
What happens now
Iām going let you know about EVERY single one of Donaldās transgressions and set-backs ā do whatever I can to ensure that he is never in a position to destroy our democracy in 2024.
Iām SO CLOSE to hitting 154,000 subscribers nowā¦ But if just 5% helped me with my paid subscriber goal at the price of a quick coffee, I could reach even more voters with the truth:
THANK YOU for supporting me. Iām honored to be in this with you. ā Mary
I was at a Republican Caucus tonight - my first as I usually Caucus Democrat. The AP called the results before our meeting even began. We had 240 people in attendance. Here's how the vote came down:
VR - 16 votes; Trump 51 votes; DeSantis - 64 votes; Haley 109 votes. My guess is that by the time the Republicans tally the state numbers - Trump will have barely won, if he wins here at all. The press used polling numbers to determine the outcome, not actual votes. WTF???? What ever happened to facts?
Iowa was hardly a surprise but losing not only a top attorney but his entire firm is a nice blow. I suspect you're educated guesses are correct about the reasons - Trump wants to testify and he probably has not paid his bills. I hope Trump does testify in the E. Jean Carroll II case. The more he talks the deeper he digs the hole.
