Aww….this one hits close to home for me. I grew up on a farm, so was saturated with country music even though I didn’t (and still don’t) care for it much. The exception is what my siblings and I referred to as “old country”, which just meant what our parents listened to (🤣) - Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Charlie Pride, etc., and, of course, Dolly Parton. The fact we considered her “old country” and that she is still very relevant today speaks volumes about her. Plus, she’s just an amazing, amazing human! My favorite is also Jolene, and my mom’s was Coat of Many Colors so that has very special meaning, as well. Thanks for this!

Dolly’s Imagination Library program spans five countries and gifts over 1 million free books each month to children around the world. She uses her life experiences and influence to address important and critically necessary social and educational issues. She is a consummate human being. I have nothing but love and admiration for her. And she’s also a gifted songwriter and performer.

Honest to god, I was just playing Dolly’s album with Jolene and I Will Always Love You. First Laurie Anderson and now Dolly Parton - we totally would have been awkward friends in high school.

Tig Notaro nailed it. Real human beings love Dolly Parton. Singer, Songwriter, Philanthropist, and first class Human Being. (Drat, I wrote this before reading Adrienne Asher's comment.)

Do you ever wonder what happened with Jolene? Did she take the man or give in to the singer?

Dolly says it's a true story about a bank clerk who hit on her husband so I guess it turned out OK since she and Carl are still together. She also said that she wrote "Jolene" on the same day she wrote "I Will Always Love You" as one does 😮

I’m your guitar guy Phil. I should have remembered that. I’m a guy that knows women can do more than any man. So I’m trying to teach myself piano. So here I am, stuck in a country that Donnie really mucked up.

I really appreciate your shows.

As a guitar player, I've always wondered HOW in the world Dolly plays guitar & banjo with those nails!!! :)

Expand full comment

She wrote the initial beat for 9 to 5 (the typewriter sound) by swiping her nails back and forth

That’s so cool🎸

I’ve wondered the same thing.🎸

An interesting and amazing factoid: Dolly Parton wrote “Jolene” and “I will

Like you I didn't grow-up listening to country music, but certainly remember her pop crossover hits you mentioned. And it wasn't until a few years ago, that I've come to see Dolly a genuine American treasure. She is the real deal as an artist, entertainer, humanitarian & a business woman. Love her!

I don't care that '9 to 5' is 40 years old, it is STILL HYSTERICALLY FUNNY! Dolly is a total wonder.
