There are about 48,739 reasons he should be in jail. Would someone kindly pick one and put him there? Happy holidays!

Are you sure there aren’t 100k reasons why tRump shouldn’t be locked up? Mary is the only sensible Trump. Thanks for helping to defeat Authoritarianism and Fascism.

Thank you, same to you. This is getting sooooooo tiresome. Lock him up already!

Trump needs to be put in prison. Where he belongs.

The image of tRUMP, wearing a complexion matching onesie, clutching the cell bars from the INSIDE, tears streaming down both cheeks?? PRICELESS!!

In my opinion, the Donald should've been put in jail long ago for voicing attacks on Judges, the assistants, the DOJ officials, etc. He wants to see what he can get away with and thus far he has gotten away with everything. Put him in the clink for a few days; he'll use that to raise more money, so it's a win win for him, but he probably won't like being in jail, so it will be worth it for the Judges and DOJ. If he comes out and immediately goes off the rails again, yank him back to jail, and do this until he complies with Judges' orders to stop trying his case out in the public and making threats. the end. carry on.

Exactly what I say jail every time he spews his Hitler rhetoric.

Expand full comment

Why yes , because the law has been applied or even in some cases punitive to the rest who have gone before the court and did exactly what Donald has done.

Expand full comment

Yes!! My head will explode if I hear one more so-called "expert" say that putting Donald in jail would be a "win" for him in terms of fundraising. So what?!!! Weighed against the damage to democracy, the contribution to the erosion of public confidence in our institutions, the example that is being set for future criminals, etc. it is worth it. Plus, as you mention, Donald will hate being in jail, for even an hour. So give him a weekend for starters. And if he emerges to resume spewing hateful nonsense the very next day, put him back in jail. Ask educators about the importance and effectiveness of consistency...

As a sixth grade teacher, I completely concur!

Thank you for giving me a chuckle! I am laughing out loud because I posted as a piano teacher, envisioning a relatively calm, one-to-one learning environment. I wasn't even thinking about a classroom setting, a far more appropriate example of my point.

What is the Real Reason that his bail hasn't been revoked ?

Being a FORMER POTUS does not endow him with the ability to flaunt the law.

Trump is just an ordinary Citizen, not a monarch .

Put aside his former status and treat him as he advocated the "Non- Guilty" Central Park Give be treated.

Some Rich , Fifth Ave. Democrat or Sutton Place Independent should take out some Full page Ads, elucidating that set of FACTS. Five deeper if you can, please Mary , 💯.

I'd like to see him stay long enough for his orange hair to return to gray and balding, his fake tan wear off, and his arse sag without his girdle.

He shouldn’t be permitted to exploit his detention by fundraising from behind bars.

Expand full comment

He won't be able to fund-raise from behind bars. He won't have a phone, so no access. The bad news is that he would start right up fund-raising the moment he was released.

William we are way past what Donald has gotten away with and it angers us all.

Remember when we landed on the moon our parents would say “ if they can land a rocket on the moon surely you can fold your cloths” , boy oh boy how wish that again because it worked though I know this is more severe . My question is are the judges afraid themselves or are they trying to mitigate the appeals into a long drawn out delaying process.

Indeed.. your last sentence/question is most telling... we probably won't find out until years from now in their memoirs -or- if he passes on - and then a vast army of followers and sycophants will proffer up a litany of lame reasons for blindly supporting him.

Thank you, as a lawyer, I always enjoy the deep dives. The law is a powerful instrument.

Joyce did a superb summary perspective and tied in some poignant family linkage.

And his latest diatribe on his pitiful social media platform is full of rants about what is very similar to Hitler’s Final Solution campaign. And the media - crickets. I just don’t get it.

Isn't there one more player in place now by the name Elon Musk? 🤔 Sometimes I think those two idiots were cut from the same crusty old mold.

I for some reason in the back of my mind "what's left of it" DT is setting a hell fire year coming up and it's not going to be pretty. I watched the story of Rev. Jones everything I watch it, yes I visualize DTs muggy shot. I hope to hell he doesn't do it, but.

Thanks Mary, I love all that you do for all of us resisters. ❤️

That’s for his base and it has worked death treats on the judges and yet he still remains in his mind the powerful

Oh for a judge with the actual guts to put Donald in jail where he belongs. I suspect the Secret Service is telling the courts it would be a nightmare for them to protect him in jail, but there must be a Club Fed somewhere they can hold him and keep him off social media, off his rally stages and silent in general. House arrest with no electronics save a TV for him to yell at?

This was the subject of Brian Beutler's substack today. Judges are being timid and not imposing penalties they'd apply to anyone else. Totally makes a mockery of "everyone is equal before the law". I mean, we all know that, but to have our faces rubbed in it, repeatedly, is dispiriting.

Expand full comment

The slightest inroad Donald can find he will appeal and have his lawyers argue again and again. Yes this is very dispiriting.

Leavenworth comes to my mind...

Butner N C Hospital for the Criminally Insane comes to mind too.

I don't understand why the Secret Service is in the way of tfg going to jail. Just pull up a folding chair right outside his cell, sit the agent in it, rinse and repeat for shift changes.

Yes Pamela! Rinse (with Lysol) is the operative word.

They have extra large cells to put the mob bosses in with their stoves, couches, tables and cots; ie; The Godfather. They could take down dividers and enlarge a tier of cells and put him and his Secret Service babysitters in it.

Carpenters need jobs, also .

Trump and his goombas are intent on emulating Putin, zi, Kim, etc.

I’ve never seen a judicial system come under such vitriolic abuse as what’s happening now with Donald Trump. If the system of law and order breaks down the USA is well and truly f**ked

Expand full comment

I don’t know if this makes sense.

The amount of money this country spent/ spends on wars and to the right strips people of their rights I have no problem with money well spent to remand Donald .

A deep dive into the courtroom’ in which our future may rest would be enlightening and fascinating. I do find that news of a functioning court is somewhat calming. Thank you Mary.

Yes to a deep dive. Thank you, Mary!

Mary, a deep dive into this subject would be most appreciated! I follow “-“‘s trials and I want to understand the legal moves and how the smaller outcomes fit into the big picture down the road. It’s a big chess game with unexpected twists and turns, with the end resulting in his comeuppance (fingers crossed). Thank you for ALL that you are doing to save our democracy.

Hi Pambo,

Joyce Vance, Heather Cox Richardson, and Robert Hubbell--all on Substack--can help with legal, historical context, and big picture political, respectively; while Mary fills in the personal, psychological, and color. If you read all four authors you will be truthfully as informed as possible.

If it is a big news day I reluctantly turn on the TV and watch at least the 'A' block of Nicole Wallace and Lawrence O'Donnell (pre-recorded) on MSNBC. Then I turn the infernal machine OFF.

Hope this helps....

Teri Kanefield is excellent as well; she breaks down all the legalese into bite-size pieces, so we have an understanding of what is happening, legally speaking. Unfortunately, she's not on Substack, but is her website is below. I followed her on Twitter (before I quit that site) and she's great.
