Speaker Mike Johnson says he’s blurring the faces of more than one January 6 Insurrectionist to help them avoid prosecution. That is a crime. Read on👇
His reasoning was diabolical and his action likely illegal:
"We don’t want them to be retaliated against and to be charged by the DOJ,” Johnson said.
“Retaliated against” is Republican speak for “held accountable.” Mike Johnson is actively assisting criminals evade apprehension, trial, and, potentially, punishment.
Luckily, in this country there are two phrases that accurately describe what Johnson is doing.
The first is obstruction of justice.
The second is being an accessory after the fact.
You don’t need to be a legal expert (like the wonderful attorney Joe Gallina, who expands on this below) to understand the law:
18 U.S. Code § 3 reads, in part:
“Whoever, knowing that an offense against the United States has been committed, receives, relieves, comforts or assists the offender in order to hinder or prevent his apprehension, trial or punishment, is an accessory after the fact.”
The code states that the accessory shall be fined and jailed by up to half the sentence the insurrectionist receives. It means up to 15 years in prison for Johnson.
Mike Johnson must have realized what a mistake he’d made, because within minutes of his statement, his staff went into damage control overdrive.
“The Department of Justice already has access to raw footage from January 6, 2021,” was the best “excuse” they could come up with.
Can we marvel at the sheer hypocrisy of the Republican Party?
These self-proclaimed champions of law and order are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of President Biden, despite the fact that every accusation thus far has proven to be false. Yet, when one of their own is allegedly implicated in a crime—no matter how banal or serious—they actively obstruct justice in order to conceal the wrongdoing.
You can’t make this stuff up.
I asked legal expert Joe Gallina if there’s any chance we’ll see “inmate Mike Johnson” anytime soon.
